The babies are beautiful...sure hate I have 3 indoor cats 2 of whom are dedicated hunters of anything furry. Strange thing..they have never given my chicks a second look!

Ummmm... I think I may have committed polygamy. I outside sitting with the chickens when I felt something hit the top of my foot. When I looked down there was a little cockerel giving me a tilty-head stare. I went back to reading and felt it again. This time I sat and watched the little guy pick up a THIRD pebble and drop in on my foot.

Doesn't this mean we're married?

I've never seen anything like it. Is that normal chicken behavior?

After having read many posts on the meat thread, I am able to butcher and eat my own cockerals. Most people do not "enjoy" doing the killing. I personally feel taking a life should be something to give us pause. One person on the meat threads said "I give them a good life and one very bad day," or something close to that. I would rather process my birds than to have someone use them to train fighting dogs or other roosters. Or, as we recently learned about, "flip" the chickens to other owners.

If "the world as we know it" goes to heck in a handbasket, you may well learn to eat rabbit. My mother's family keptthe breeder trio as pets. The babies were handled to keep them from being totally wild, but like you say they didn't eat the "pets".

I'm glad you expressed yourself. Feel better after that vent?

Still looking. I think some travel is going to be involved to find any good stock. Probably Arkansas of all places

This breeding program for black javas is starting to look like a a royal pain of a bad idea though
