I lost the blue laced red cochin x from that batch (mareks...the only one of the few dozen who were apparently exposed who got it). And keeping the blue wheaten cochinX from that batch. Still have the 3 leghorn/cochin ladies, but planning on selling them next weekend.

Sold 4 of my mottled cochins. The pair from the newport show plus a blue mottled hen and black mottled pullet. Got another black mottled pullet to add to the batch. Sending my pretty splash mottled rooster back to his previous owner, along with 2 of my black mottled cochins. Growing up 11 blue mottleds from the splash/black cross.

Got rid of the New Hamp roo and 2 leghornX roos. Still have 3 NH roos and 4 NH pullets. All of my cochins are in the garagd for winter.....so the NH will get their coop and pen, minus the 2 extra roosters who will be in bachelor pads.

Trying to make winter easy. Just about have everyone arranged to where I don't have to let anyone out of coops unless I want to. So in bad weather, I will just stay inside with my hot cocoa.....

Your right it is always your favorite when you loose one.

Well after dealing with mites & scaley leg mites having finally eradicated them I have decided on 1 thing no more feathered leg chickens they were the hardest to treat. My poor little brahma roo is still being treated his shanks just got eaten badly. We are looking at copper marans & dorkings have not made a decision yet. Anyone with experience with either these breeds?? Where they can be found ??
All of my clean legged birds had no problem at all. What gets me is we were using DE weekly, every couple weeks sprinkled a little sevin on the bedding the little buggers creeped in. argh. so now we are going to be doing some permethrin weekly, also got to paint those roosts in the next couple days. But I felt really bad for the brahmas as their feet & legs were really affected. Everyone around here is tired of the feet leg massage they are not very mani motivated.

As far as those breeds, I dont have experience. I can say though that I too thought about BCM's and ended up delaying that for now at least until the French let us have some new stock. Nothing against any one that has or breeds them, they are very unique breeds. It is just that it is sad that the breed slowly drifts away from standard here since we can not get any new blood in the lines. You also mentioned staying away from feather feet, which means you would have to settle on the Americanized non feather legged BCM. Now to promote my own agenda, LOL I want to order some base stock of Delawares to pick and choose which I add to the breeders and the ones that dont make it go to the layer pen that needs restocked. So I am going to make an order of a at least 25 chicks the first of Feb. Since I dont need that many, if you decide to start chicks in Feb then we can go in on an order if you want. It is very hard to find Dorkings in any other color than silver though from hatchery stock. What an interesting breed though.

We had considered delewares last spring but could not find a breeder for them do you know one ? There is a guy I. ill wno is willing to part with some dorkings thers is also sandhill who has various TV colors limited we still have not fully decided

On the marans.... I got some wheatens over a year ago and got new blood this year... BIG difference in type and color. I said I wouldn't do another LF breed right now but I'm thinking these are too good not to try. Oh chickens are a slippery slope!
