That's how I would keep several breeds at once! I had three runs but kept 4-5 breeds by putting layers like Golden Comets or Leghorns, in with my EE's or RIR's, it really does work for having egg layer and breeding stock! I did that so I could hatch the EE eggs and then sell my eggs to family!

I guess I'm just a doofus. It just never occurred to me before.

I'll be placing an order for some way over-priced pullets from MPC if anyone wants to share the insanity...

Marans have the lowest lay rate of the breeds we raise.
If you are simply interested in dark brown eggs, you should also consider the Welsummer. Our Welsummer lay eggs nearly as dark as our Marans. We have to collect them separately to avoid confusion.

Barnevelders are a horrible choice if you want dark eggs - Out of the countless flocks, eggs, and birds I have seen, I have yet to see true dark eggs. They usually just lay brown to an orangey color.

Welsummers are pretty good - Most lay a terracotta color, some are pretty dark.

If you truly want a dark, beautiful egg, though - Go with Marans. The Black Coppers in particular are known to lay the darkest of all eggs, especially good quality Black Coppers!! love

I think the Welsummer are a lot prettier and way more reasonably priced, but for once I am thinking about how I want the eggs to look instead of how pretty they'd be in my yard. I wish there were breeders who could sell sexed chicks. I hate buying all that feed for a bird that's destined for the freezer. If I'm going to do that, I want to do it with a breed that will fill out fast.

It is easy to sell sexed chicks if you can wait 4 weeks. That is when many roos start to show up. 6 weeks is better. I have my pullet only people wait that long. Then if anything comes out a roo they get replacments. I have one now waiting on spring hatch for replacments since I got hit with bear and lost so many. Only have 2 laying right now but the others are just about too.

It is getting close to christmas and I need so help. Hubby wants goose again for dinner. Problem if our walmart does not have it this year I have no idea where to go. All our local stores are not carrying goose anymore. Does anyone have a store that they know is carrying goose this year? Please keep an eye out for me and let me know. Distance not an issue too much. Thanks

After this attempt at quarantining I realized how bad I am at it and swore I would never buy anything other than day olds or hatching eggs again. I guess I'll be buying from hatcheries from now on.

Tonight was a night of drama. While I was out Christmas shopping my SLW backup roo got out of his bachelor pen and into the main Wyandotte pen. The door between the runs was always just held shut with gravity. I didn't anticipate the two dotte boys being so intent on fighting. (forehead smack) When I got home the pen was open. The regular roo was in with his girls but was a little bloody. The other boy was completely missing. For some reason my splash ameraucana was in his pen.

It took about thirty minutes of searching in the dark to find the backup roo under the coop behind a layer of hardwire cloth. I had to cut the wires and shimmy under the coop to drag him out to take a look at him. He's really bloody and one of his eyes is probably going to swell shut, but at least it appears to be all superficial. MAN their combs sure do bleed!

I got everyone back in their own pen and Blu-Koted the boys. I'll bungee strap the run door before I let them out in the morning and hopefully everyone will heal up just fine.

I'm not a big one for unneeded medication but do y'all think they need some antibiotics to stave off infections in their wounds or do you think the Blu-Kote is enough. I couldn't treat right around the backup boy's eyes for fear of getting it in there.

Gah! Stupid boys and their testosterone! I was sure one of them flew out of the run and fed the local foxes.

Daphine.....there is a product you can get called Veterycyn (I think that is how it is spelled) I use if on all my animals and humans. I can attest to the healing properties of it and it should be in any med. supplies. It is pricey...best price I found was $30 at TSC. But for what it provides well worth it. It is a spray so easy to use and effective on wounds. I would give it consideration. It has a wide range of use too.
