Ok Nella, I have to stay competitive... so how's this for cute?

Gonna have 4 for sale in 3 weeks, 1 REW buck, 1 REW doe, 1 chestnut buck, and 1 chestnut doe. The rest I'm keeping for another month to see who fills out the best.

Ya'll have got to stop with the rabbit pix, though. I minimize the browser window so fast when my kids come into the room that I'm pretty sure they think I've got a dirty secret.

Jazzy, the lionhead, is the only rabbit I've ever owned, so this is just my personal experience. She's kind of like most of my rabbits. She's not going to run over to let me pick her up but if I'm ignoring her she wants to be right up against me. If I hold her loosely she thrashes, but once I snug her up she relaxes. One time when I was holding her up to my shoulder, my daughter let my dog into the room and she freaked out and bit my neck. She didn't break the skin or leave a mark but we call her Bunicula, now. My daughter doesn't want to get her out of her cage or put her back in because she's afraid she'll wiggle away and she'll get hurt.

So, here's a question I never thought I would ask... When do rabbits go through puberty? Will she be more relaxed later?

Nella may agree on this with me, but I've heard and seen bucks are better than does.. does get very tempermental when wanting to breed, but bucks get a whiff of another buck or doe and water sprayer needed! I just gave back a buck to someone who let me borrow him, and he was a sprayer and was good at making it 3-4 feet! I'm glad he's gone, my others are not as bad! I have some weird mini lops, but no "mean" bunnies! They can be a bit harder to handle if you don't constantly work with them, but that's where selective buying comes into play and holding and playing with all the babies. I was told by the mini rex breeder that they're perfect for children because of their small size and nice personality. So, as I said... each breed has a certain "personality" but each one can prove that wrong.

@Daphnie......neck bit by a bunny!!!? I can picture it....bunny fangs and all. I use to have one that was just fine til the door to the hutch was open. It would let you pet it then it would whip around and bite the dickens out of you. But I think it was the hormone thing for him too...he had become breeding age and there was no doe. We took him over to my moms and they would let him out to run around the yard....then he started staying out all the time. He did this for almost 4 years! And he slept with the cat...I think he may have been confused.

Since you mentioned your bunny bite....I went into the LF hen house to gather eggs today. One of the hens was on the nest that everyone wants to use and ignore the other 4. Anyway....I reached in like I have for the past 2 years..felt under her for the eggs and when I did she reached out and grabbed my lower lip!!!! AND she would not let go!!! I wish I had grabbed her and tagged her so she could either go to freezer camp or another home. But I was so startled I stood there trying to figure out just what happened!! Since she looks like all the other 11 and it was low light I don't know who it was. Guess I will wait til everyone one is out to gather. Now I will have to explain to everyone I see why I have a big red cut on my lip....I will NOT tell the truth.

I've had mini lops who hop to the front of the cage and want lovins, then I have some who sit in the corner but aren't mean (I can move them and stuff and they'll not kick or anything) as long as you hold them supportively. Some go crazy from hormones but calm back down. I've heard of the "teenager stage" that's the age they mature and are like teenagers, they want to have their way and just can't let them! The mini rex I got are sweeties! Which is good since you can't scruff hold them without possibly damaging their pelt. The doe likes to hop to the front when she sees me, waiting on me to open the cage and pet her.

I have had one mean bunny, he was a mini lop buck and was a orange color. I bought him when he was full grown so dont know if he was mistreated or what but he was weird, you couldnt open the cage to feed him without getting either bitten, clawed, or likely both. He would even make this weird noise at you if you came anywhere near the cage. I always had pet rabbits and they were usually sweet, nothing compared to that one.

Well, orange is a color that is being worked on... you probably got some bad genetics with that one (they have to mix other breeds to get those colors and then work on the type), every mini lop I've picked up has either just sat there or just wanted to be put back down. They become quite testy when they hit 5-6 months when the hormones kick in, but I was able to show both of mine at the show with not one scratch! That's saying something, because after being grabbed and shoved in a small box to be picked up and handled by a complete stranger you'd think they'd have been more stressed since it went on all day Saturday and until lunch on Sunday, but nope! As a breeder, they should have handled all the babies daily, and should have culled such aggression, I've seen does who are completely ok with their owner when wanting to breed but bit every judge and get disqualified for that.

Oh he wasnt my first mini lop, the others I had I bought from a guy I knew that raised rabbits locally, had no trouble with them, bucks or does, mostly were broken black patterns. I had a solid white bunny when I was alot younger too, I dont remeber the breed that far back though. Had one fuzzy lop, he was the sweetest thing ever, would let you hold him as long as you wanted without fuss.

I didn't mean to make anyone think Jazzy is mean! She was terrified and that's why she bit me. My dog was jumping up trying to see what I had and she was in a complete panic. She's never bit me before or since. It's my dog that's a huge pain in the patootie. Please don't rule out owning a lionhead based on that incident. She's completely perfect, other than that. Definitely our easiest pet to tend.

@Barnqueen, thanks so much for that story! It's probably completely inappropriate, but I laughed out loud picturing you with a chicken hanging from your lip. I really want to come to the cookout. Right now I don't have anything on the schedule but I never know if one of my kids will yank my weekend away from me. As far as what I could bring... hmmmmm... I DO still have six cockerels in the freezer that I can't bring myself to cook... Oh, WAIT! That breaks Bairo's no-chicken-rule.

Hehe....yeah...I am sure it was a very funny pic...but no one is every around when I get into these situations. Believe me....I could write a book on some of the situations I have fell into like this one.
