Here is what I found out: They got them off craigslist from someone in Sweetwater. She wouldn't say who. They've been raising chickens for about two years. She has had some die. They are big into hatching. They have a whole building for incubators. She offered to give me some new chics. I declined.

Two remaining goldens look good. Eyes look good. Butt looks good. However, one of my silver-laced from the other run has a pasty butt. Her eyes look good, but her butt is matted.

I will not buy from craigslist again. I have learned a very expensive lesson - both financially and emotionally. I have two business cards from breeders. Their poultry looked really healthy. I will stick to the ones I know are good. I don't know enough to be putting all my chickens at risk.

We got the vaccine (ILT? Is that what it is called) and were going to vaccinate today. We decided to wait until the weather was better since it is so yucky outside today.

I'm not offended by your using logic when it comes to your flock. Just because I'm a wimp doesn't mean I'm opposed to culling. Good chicken owners do what's best for their flock even when it's tough.

I think when I picked up the chicks from you we spoke briefly about culling. If you remember I may be able to make the call but I do not possess the ability to do the deed. My mind is logical but my heart is wimpy!

Okay, now my bunnies have gotten in a fight. So dead chicken last night and two rabbits that look beat up today. One of them even has a lip that is ripped. I'm "animaled" out. (made that word up) Wish you could hire an expert animal surrogate for about a week so you could regroup.

Now, chicken pros: I went to feed and water this morning, and one of my golden wyandottes was dead. I freaked out. We got him out and looked him over really good. No blood anywhere. Checked him out. Nothing appears wrong with him. He was fine. He hadn't been acting sick or anything. The other three left in that run/coop look fine and act fine. BUT.....this is the third golden laced wyandotte that has died and they all came from the same person. COINCIDENCE? The other two died before the age of 4 months. He was almost six months old.

Wouldn't you contact the person who sold them to you? These are the only three I've lost. It is getting easier as the other two almost sent me into full-blown depression. But I don't know how to buy chickens now and how do you know if they are carriers, etc.?

I am sorry to here about your chicken problems. I have experienced a similar situation and have drawn some very dark opinions of "quality breeders with business cards". In the end my bad luck and bad judgement turn out to be a blessing of sorts. During this experience I decided to join BYC, found the E. TN thread & all the nice people here so I now try to look at the positive things which came from my experience.

I still do not know the reason behind my loses. I will know soon if it was something on my end or not since I have the chicks from Tennesseckn. I am almost afraid to put them on the ground where the others were but am going to take my chances & see what happens. I have introduced 1 pullet to the area since I lost the chicks & she has done okay (she was the sorta snotty one but she looks okay today & she's been in the lot for about a month now).

My knowledge of chickens is not vast by any means but from my understanding just about every area has Marek's in the ground (maybe with the exception of virgin soil). Also the things on my property will not be the same as the things on another person's property. With that being said the things my birds have a tolerance for will not be the same as birds from another location and vice versa. So anytime you introduce any birds to your property they will be exposed to things foreign to them and will react to it & hopefully develop a tolerance/immunity to it. IMO it would be similar to moving to a different state or country: if you always lived on the coast with the nice salt air you most likely never experience many allergy/sinus issues but move to E. TN and your body will start trying to cope with stagnant humid allergy filled air.

From here on out I will trust my gut. If I get a bad vibe I will listen to it & not be Smeagol, "We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious."
