I have done some coop rearranging again. We put up one of the dog kennels and used tarps for roof & walls on part of it. Everyone got their wings trimmed & are not happy. I swore the last time we had temporary coops it would be the last time. The way its attached to our other pen gives them a 10x20 lot and you can't see it from the street
I moved the growing babies to the main coop & run.![]()
So here's my questions: Will they need a heat lamp at night? The windows on the coop are open but I shut the small door at night so no drafts. Should I close the windows? If I close the windows all the way then there will not be any ventilation to amount to much. I checked at midnight and the temp was about 70 but I turned the light on with the dimmer as low as it would go. They were all piled up in a nest box so they were not cold at all. This is my first time with them in the Fall so I am lost. I know this morning after I opened the small door & they went outside they seemed fine. And if the light is on then I will need to put food & water in the coop? They were 6 weeks old on Sunday or Monday. Thanks
I think the orps are more comfortable in cooler temps than other breeds. I know that when they are in the brooder they are FAR away from the light when it is at the temps recommended for chicks.
My OE mamma that was raising the splash chick has returned to the roost at night and left the little chick to roost by itself on the nesting box roost. It seems perfectly warm. I have the windows closed up but the opening under the eaves are open all winter in the big coop.
