Quote: Ive though about using the deep litter method. I never thought about tossing in grass clippings. I also never thought to use the leaves we picked up with our lawn sweeper. If I dont sell some of my chickens soon, I will have to let them free range sooner and I really dont want to do that until I know the bugs are out. They like to wonder to the neighbors. Once I get down to a more manageable number, and get the permanent bigger coop built, it should be easier to keep clean.

4 for me today so far. yesterday, i got 7. Sadly, I might be having to do an antibiotic run on my chickens as a couple babies are sneezing. if i do, then I wont be able to use any of my eggs for awhile :-( I might be able to convince my sweetheart to build me a small coop to quarentine my sneezing chicks so I dont have to throw eggs away

My girls are Black Sex Links and Im getting on average, 6 eggs a day. The numbers are kinda low considering I have 6 laying hens and 3 laying pullets but Im still having to sell eggs. If you need some eggs, just let me know. as the weather warms and the sun comes out more (i forgot what the sun looks like) i should be getting even more eggs a day. Also, im selling some of my chickens if you would be interested or know of anyone local that would be. Selling 3 cockerals and a few babies.

My babies are growing fast and my coop will be too small here pretty soon
I will certainly keep you in mind if I need to buy more eggs!!!! That would be great! Not sure I'm ready for more babies yet, though. Gotta think about it! Currently, I've got 2 Silkie babies in the brooder. I'm hoping to set up a separate Silkie coop.
I love hearing from people on our side of the mountains!
Has anyone noticed an increase yet in the number of eggs they are getting per day? I know we are not very far into the longer day cycle yet but just wondering if anyone else has had an increase.
I also can't wait to get more chickens! This is our first year with them and we've has soooo much fun. We just moved and I think maybe I'll get a rooster and raise my own chicks instead of buying. I don't know if I'll end up with a reliable broody, tho. Nobody has tried being broody yet. Not last year or this year. Maybe the spring weather will help stimulate this response?
(If anyone has roosters for sale you should know I'm super cheap so I'm looking for a pretty much free Easter Egger rooster :) I'm also keeping my eye on craigslist because there always seems to be people who got chickens and wanted hens but ended up with some boys and need to find homes.)
Ditto on hearing from more people over here!!! I had about 2wks in early Dec where I wasn't getting any eggs. My 3 Leghorns picked up and have been the only layers since then until this week when 1 or 2 of the EEs finally started up again.
3 White Leghorns
2 EE
1 30-something week old Cochin (hasn't layed yet)
1 Wyandotte/BR mix (also hasn't started laying)
= only about 1-3 eggs per day

That's gonna change next winter!!!!!!!!!

I got 27 eggs today. A week ago, I was getting about 12.
WOW!!!! How many ladies???

That's a good thing to have and I'm hoping for the same. There has been some sneezing in my coop also. No other symptoms, though.

Quote: Same here, nothing else seems wrong except the sneezing. I didnt think anything of it because when I first noticed it, it was when I doing a coop/run cleaning so I figured it was the dust but they havebt stopped sneezing and right now, there is no dust with this crappy weather. If you want to see some pictures of my chickens and babies, i think I have some from today on my profile. I know I just posted them in the main Washingtonians thread :)

They are awfully cute!!!! Interesting colors!

Quote: Im loving the colors Whiski is throwing. I doubt my Black Sex Links are throwing much of the color ;-) His three pullet daughts that are laying are laying every day so Im not only getting pretty colors but good layers so far :) Im hoping to keep one of his sons just in case Whiski passes on (not sure of his age or anything about him) but so far, his three cockeral sons arent very nice so Im gonna keep a few baby cockerals around and hope one is friendly and colorful. And if not, Ill have at least 6 of his daughters
