Easy Quail ID

We use Blue Lotion Spray. It's a Topical stain used for identifying cattle but it works for birds too. It comes in a spray bottle but I spray a squirt on a Q-Tip and dab it on the bird. I like to use it on the top of the leg on real young birds as when they begin losing there fuzz and feathering out it goes away. I picked mine up at Southern States but I'm sure other places that sell equine and cattle supplies have it.
There is another stain like product called Blue Coat which is a wound dressing if I'm not mistaken. That's what I was originally looking for when I found this.

Some are made to reuse & the locking tab sticks out past the surface. About half of the disposable ones you can stick your fingernail in & release them. Some you can take something with a sharp point & release the point. I assume you leave them sloppy on the leg. I wouldn't try to save one from a live bird though but you could take them off after butchering. I have to drive 75 min to replace mine or I wouldn't bother with it. I like to save money but my time is worth more then these cost.
