I adore my cochins too. I adore my silkies. We just cannot keep males. If I give them away or sell them, someone will likely eat them. Why not us?

If someone is in Mid Ohio and wants them, they are forsale now.

Sorry to offend anyone, but this entire forum here is about meat chickens.

glad I ran across this post! I have a ton of 2 week old cochins and almost have look to be cockerels. I have been wondering about butchering them. I would love to sell them but I think that will never happen so I will eat them! I didnt think there would be much there and didnt think it would be worth time and mess of butchering.
Guess i will let them grow up and butcher and have some great meals!

How can you tell at this age? I have a little Blue Cochin that is two weeks old today and was wondering if it's a male or female. It doesn't matter to me because it's my granddaughter's show chicken for 4H but was wondering if I need to have hubby build another coop for all the boys beings I'm pretty certain that one of my GLW pullets is actually a cockerel! I'm keeping him though because they are so pretty. I currently have a RIR rooster.

Will roosters get along if they are not with hens?

some roosters do i have had some do fine but i had 2 buff orpingtons in the same pen since about 4 weeks old and all the sudden at about 11 months they just started fighting horably with each other.

Thank God for this post! I wanted to know if bantam cochins were worth it. I bought eggs off of ebay and most ended up being roos and poor quality!

My sister in law is Asian. She has asked me to raise Silkie roosters for her. They are considered a delicacy and has said I can sell them for $15. She would prefer to get hers live as she and her parents eat parts that most of would not. To each their own, LOL, as long as she doesn't expect me to.

Go ahead and eat them. I raise hundreds of bantam Cochins a year and the ones that are not breeding quality go in the freezer. They have a fair amount of meat on them and I raise them in a nice grassy pen with plenty of delicious food, same as I do for my breeders and growers. The meat isn't as tasty as Marans but it is a whole lot better than that nasty grocery store meat!

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I was wondering if bantams had a use at all. Eggs? Why get a bantam when a full size lays bigger eggs? Wouldn't two bantams lay the equivalent of one large breed? Eat the same as one large breed? I just don't get the bantam thing.

Do they taste better than full sized chickens? Like a cornish hen?
