sorry, couldnt find a better place to post this.
so my eggs are all fertile.
I have read lots of conflicting info on storage, and decided im gonna not wash til i eat and leave on counter for now. have a dozen sitting there about 8-9 days. cracked 3 open this morning for breakfast and they all have wispy white trails on each end of the yokes.
one had a blood spot with veins already started. I know thats how the yoke attaches to shell and air sac etc. are they ok to eat still or just toss and start over with a new batch of eggs and refrigerate after all to avoid anything?
thanks all in advance.

I don't wash my eggs but refrigerate them because my house gets hot inside during the day. And I like to crack cold eggs. You should just be able to pick what you don't want out. And I believe if you don't they'd still be fine to eat.

Hi, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I can't help but wonder how hot is your room temp? You shouldn't see any development on eggs that weren't in the 98 degree range for more than 12-24 hours. I seriously question if it was actually vein development you saw, especially if collected everyday. Blood spots and meat spots might both be mistaken. Take pictures next time, so we can all learn! ;)

I have discovered that eggs at room temp decline in quality after several days, even unwashed. So if they aren't going to be eaten within the week, I do refrigerate. I never wash (not even before eating), that's just a personal choice.

And I NEVER toss eggs. Usually anything not fit for human consumption (even just visually) will be fed back to the animals. And they NEVER complain. :D Shells always go back to the chickens.

Thing is, when I'm collecting hatching eggs.. they sit at room temp for 10-14 days before going in the incubator. They don't start to develop until incubation because they are laid on different days and that would cause a staggered hatch, which in nature means a bunch of dead chicks/embryos.

We have eaten fertilized, room temp (65 degrees) stored eggs even 30+ days later with no issues or signs of development.

In the past it was said that an egg stored at room temp is aged 1 week/per day in comparison to one stored in the fridge. That may have been washed, but to me even unwashed it is relevant. My end result is (I know I'm repeating, sorry) all eggs except the current dozen we are eating goes into the fridge... where they will last SERIOUSLY 6 months or LONGER!

Do any of you wipe the eggs when you bring them in we live in Washington we can get 2 inches of rain a day and muddy feathered feet. I get a lightly damp towel and wipe of the feather trails. Most often the eggs are clean but you don’t want that absorbed through the shell the really dirty eggs I take in break into a dish and feed back the next day. I have two little piggies that always have a muddy covered shell. Feathered feet are not always your friend either.
