Eating Layers...

Most of my cockerels start crowing at the 14-ish week range which is a good time to cull anyway. The first crows are not as loud as a mature bird and almost comical to hear their attempts.
I've always wondered what starts the onset of crowing - mine are always way earlier than that - like at 8-10 weeks- which is way too early to cull non-meat-breed birds.
 
They are living animals so who knows why they do what they do. I sure don't. Part of it might be that some cockerels mature a lot faster than others. I’ve never seen it but some people have posted about a two week old cockerel trying to crow. Part of it may be flock dynamics. If the flock has a dominant rooster that may slow down a younger one starting. It’s probably a combination of these and several other things I have no clue about.
