I had my chicks on the small Pine shavings, and noticed them actually EATING it like it's food! Not sure if this is a problem, but I move them over to a rubber mat.

A lot of people put a layer of paper towles down for the first few day, after that they should be able to figure out what is food and what is not.

Yeah, I saw some setups with paper towels, but had no idea they would actually consume the pine shavings. They seem fine though.

Pine is fine. Rhymes. Cedar is not fine. Stick with pine and you are fine.

Not worried so much about toxicity, even though pine isn't perfect in that category, better than Cedar, but still not perfect. I'd trust Aspen over Pine or Cedar. However, I'm more concerned over impaction. Too much of anything isn't good...but my little chicks are fine. Apparently Pine is tasty too! lol.

This post is mostly to warn others.

Mine ate bits of it when they were chicks. They're now almost six months old and STILL eat pieces of it sometimes

A little won't hurt them, although the paper towels for the first few days may make you feel better.

We switched to paper towels because my husband read on the internet that they would eat the pine shavings. But it's just something he read on the internet, and the area under the lamp is getting pretty poopy.
