Eating those very 1st eggs?

The first eggs are fine to eat. Unless you have given antibotics or worming meds. I personally didn't eat the very FIRST egg of each of my pullets. But that was because I "blew" them to keep as prooud reminders of my first girls. But the second ones taste just as good!

:hmm we ate our first eggs, we blew them out, saved the shells and scrambled the eggs.

My dad is one of those that ALWAYS says

"my dad used to.........."

Thanks for the replies. I ate all of my first eggs but two and did not see a difference either. Its funny how some wives tails are just silly

I find that the ol timers knew something.... I don't eat my first pullets eggs.... Just because.... The old timers have a lot of reasons for doing things that we newbies don't understand... I hope one chimes in here...

Uh-oh...new term...what is a meat spot?

This is all nice to know. I have a 25 week old EE that I think will lay in late March. I have never had a chicken that wasn't already laying when I got them.

A meat spot is a little piece of the hen's reproductive tract or a little spot of blood that gets caught inside the egg when it is forming. Its nothing to worry about, just remove it or scramble it. It tripped my DH out when he cracked open one of our BR eggs and found a little red dot. I told him what it was and that our hens were just fine. He didn't want to "blend it in" so he picked it out.

We ate our first eggs and composted the shells.

My fiance was wondering about the spots in them too. I said it is just a fluke in nature and you see it in store bought. He said he did not see them in store bought... then said he never paid attention. I scooped it out for him and he continued on like nothing and quite enjoyed the new eggs we are getting!

I second the thought that sometimes the ole folks know something we don't. Old wives tales, legends and superstitions were often a way of passing down important information to the next generation. I know sometimes that's not true, sometimes it's just an old superstition based on nothing...or an ancient fear of wear wolves or goblins that eat babies in the night or whatever else....but still. If the old folks won't eat them...well, maybe from now on I won't either.
