EcoGlow reviews??

I watch their shoulders. When they start to get flattened wear marks on them, I raise it. With the LF I took it from lowest to highest and just skipped the middle level. Good luck with your babies!!!

So I broke down and bought one of these EcoGlows. I’ve had it plugged in to test it (no chicks yet) and I noticed the temp is a constant 90 degrees.
Now I know “the rule” states that chicks should be kept at 95 degrees for the first week.

Is 90 degrees the temp that all of you are experiencing? If so, then I suppose it’s okay.

Let me know since I will have little bantam chicks to put underneath.

These sound so neat... unfortunately our chicks will be in an unheated building and it is already getting below 40 at night. They would have to have a heat lamp or heater and this after a few weeks. It cools off fast here. This sounds like it would be great in the Spring, though. I have often marveled at my mama hens out in below-freezing weather, free-ranging with her tiny chicks running along behind her. They always stay plenty warm!

I also wonder what you would do after the chicks are larger and feathered but still need a heat source because they are half grown but it is the middle of winter... you would have to go back to a heat lamp then, I would think. I have never done the fall-chick thing before.

I wonder what the difference is, if an eCoGlow simulates a mama hen and from what I read in ALL the reviews, it seems the chicks run in and out just as if under a Mom, why wouldnt it work like you say you see in nature, the chickes run around in freezing temps then huddle under mama when they need the heat? Maybe not the first few weeks, but why not shortly there after if in a secure coop free from drafts etc.

I have bantam chicks under mine and it seemed too high for their size even on its lowest height so I put a large chamois car cleaning pad under mine so they were closer to the heat plate and its been perfect for them, as my lot are dutch chicks, they are particularly small bantams.

I think 95 is too hot anyways, no matter what anyone says. I did that on my first chicks and they were always on the other side of the brooder, avoiding the heat and getting pasty butt.

Now with the ecoglow, they WILL stay under it for a day or so after hatching, venturing out a few times.. But after that, in my 60-70F house they were out of it more than in. They'd only converge under it at night, much like a mama chicken. Have raised three or four batches of chicks under ecoglows and no problems at all. I think the external temp needs to be above 60, but assuming chicks are in the house that's usually not a problem.

My mama broody has her two weeks old chicks bouncing around on my lawn right now and it was 35F this morning. They hang under her when it gets cold but they seem quite perky and happy.

My only complaint about the ecoglow is it's small if you push the limits of what is allowed. 20 chicks WILL fit when little, but it's gonna be a real tight squeeze in a few weeks. Thankfully I have two, and there's always the larger model now. Also, it IS expensive and brinsea for some reason sends it signature required, making me go on down to UPS to get it. Grr.

I have both the EcoGlow 20 and the EcoGlow 50 and they are the BEST purchases I have ever made! They work by radiant heat, so a thermometer will not give you an accurate reading of temp underneath. The EcoGlow 20 has 3 different levels of height, plus you can raise up one side by putting a block underneath, or you can build up pine shavings to make a raised nest underneath. Chicks are able to make their own adjustments: lie underneath if cold, on the outer edge if too warm, or away from it if too hot. They also like to sit on top of it. You don't have to worry about changing height every week, like you would with a heat lamp. The EcoGlow 50 has screw through legs that have unlimited height adjustments. With both, I found that the chicks don't even use it that much by the time they are 4-5 weeks old. I have NEVER lost a chick and they have all been happy and healthy! The EcoGlow does not get too hot where it could catch fire if it was touching paper towel or pine chips. There is only a small indicator light on the EcoGlow that tells you it is working, so no disturbing light on 24/7. It will not burn the chicks either. The only downside is that you can't see the chicks while they are underneath. The EcoGlow is also very easy to clean (yes, chicks will poop on the top once they start hopping up on it!) I HIGHLY recommend the EcoGlow to anyone who is looking to raise chicks in a brooder!!!

To clean: I took a small plastic ice scraper and scrape the poop off once it is dried up. When finished using the unit, I take a soft scrub brush lightly damp with dish detergent and scrub the top and wipe off with a soft cloth - Good as new!

Also, Bantam Username, I had seen your pic on another post and thought it was too cute and I wanted to have the same setup.
While at Wally world I found a dog fluff toy on sale for 94 cents that looks like the item you're using and I put that underneath the EcoGlow.
The little Seramas are just so tiny that I really wanted to make sure they stay warm.

So far I really like the idea of the EcoGlow! I give it two thumbs up and high recommend it.
