Day 17
Its the cracked egg, I peeled off a bit of shell that was in awkward angles, it was poking at the membrane.

You could have used the pre existing thread for faster replies, but it's okay.

I wouldn't have removed the shell, but now that the membrane is exposed, simply brush on a thin amount of vaseline or coconut oil to keep it moist. This may need to be re-applied every 2-5 hours. Just keep an eye on it, and don't mess with it too much

Are you still seeing movement?

Yeah, I wouldn't have removed bits of the shell, but it was poking against the membrane..
Yes, I'm applying a bit of water, is that ok? Or should I use olive oil? It's the only oil I have.
Do you reckon the baby inside looks ok?

It's hard to tell, are you seeing little bits of movement?
Seeing veins under the membrane?

Vaseline is the best thing as it will keep it moist longer. Water will dry out very fast. I guess olive oil should be okay, better than water

I reckon I've seen some movement, not too sure, could be my eyes. Theres def some veining, when I candle it, it looks pretty normal, when I brush the brush over it, it moves so little, it might be the membrane moving..
Should I mix the olive oil with the water or separate? Im also going somewhere tomorrow, and tomorrow's Day 18, I'm not sure what I'm going to do!

Just olive oil, the water will only thin it down too much.

Will you be out for a long time?
Perhaps you can buy some vaseline and put a little on before you go. It will keep it from drying out for longer since you won't be there to keep an eye on it

Thanks both for your suggestions!
The oil is doing its job and the membrane is staying moist.

I'm not gone for too long, about 5 hours maybe?
I'm also coming home from work to moist the membrane before departing.

Eggs are just so magical. I've talked to the egg, seeing I don't have anything better to do, and the chick moved! Every few words, it would twitch. When I stopped, it stopped. So amazing, really hoping it hatches! :jumpy :fl

My pattern for adding the oil is now:
7A.M
3P.M
7P.M
10P.M

However, tomorrow I may have to tweak the routine.

7A.M
3P.M
8-9P.M

Hopefully should be okay, just be sure that humidity is good before you go.

I remember that joy! My first hatch was Dougie, my duck. I spent, literally hours, watching her and talking to her. I was singing (motivational songs 🤣🤣) to her, she was chirping back, and then suddenly I heard a crack and saw the external pip appear. I could have passed out, I was ecstatic. Didn't expect them to hatch, so that first pip was magical. I was able to be there for her hatch, and her sister's. Long wait though.

The thing is, talking to them is one of the best things you can do, they will know your voice, and it will encourage them. A mama hen will talk to her chicks, they will talk to her once internally pipped. And they will also communicate with siblings in some ways. It's very sweet and very magical.

Fingers crossed your little does okay and hatches soon :fl

So relatable! I really hope I can be there for my first quail hatch!
I've been adding some oil to keep moist and talking to it. I candled it every day as well.
Its really cool what you can see without some parts of shell!
I saw that the part I'm applying oil is the back/not the head part. You can also see the feathers, in the candling, so cool! I'll try to upload some pictures.

The air sac has gotten much bigger, hopefully it will hatch! :fl
The veining is still going strong though, can veining absorb overnight? (Or 24hours?)
