I got these two (well three but a friend took one) this weekend at a swap/sale. The people we bought them from told us they didn't know the gender. I was so excited to finally find my FBCM that I may have looked past the glaring fact they appear to be cockrels! I wanted pullets and only pullets. *sigh* I'd love opinions. I was told they were approx 10-12 weeks.

Thanks in advance :)

Honestly they don't look that rooish to me. On the other hand, if they are really 10-12 weeks old then I'd have to reluctantly say roo due to the red comb/wattles. My best guess would be that they are pullets that are quite a bit older than you were led to believe.

That would be wonderful! I'm a complete chicken novice, although I'm rapidly becoming enamored with my chickens!! How old would you guess them to be? They're sassy with the year old Ameraucanas.

If they are hens and their combs are that red, they are close to laying, so I'd say at least 20 weeks. Age can be really hard to tell on a chicken with just photos though. However if your Ameraucanas are full-grown and these guys are sassy with them, I'd say they're close to full-grown themselves. A 10 week old chick usually wouldn't have the confidence to get sassy with an adult.

They still make peep noises if that's any help. Id say they're half the Ameraucanas size but will peck at the lone Splash Ameraucana. The other Ameraucanas are too snobby to associate with the Marans. Thank you so much for your help!

Ohhh....sorry to be a bummer but if they are still peeping and are half the size of the Ameraucanas then it is less likely they are girls. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though...

Ok, I'd like to give you some hope. First edit the img. take the img from the front and back so it will show in the forum.

second take a second picture that includes the rest of the body and tail.

I have a 20 week old BCM pullet and roo. It was evident fairly early I believe who was who but it was easier because I had one of each.

One thin I did notice. My roo had copper feathers that came in all over his back here and there mixed with black.

My girl it was only around her neck and they were there earlier. Also My roo got big faster. I can see why they are used for dual purpose.

With only what I can see I think you have a chance at girl but the red of the comb worries me. Get that second pic. Oh and he started crowing at about 18 weeks so if they are 12 weeks old you'll know soon maybe :)

both look like cockerels 1000000%. in that pic then one in front you can clearly see the copper coloring in the saddle area and with the combs basicly the same size i have to say both are 100% cockerels

I'll take some better pics tomorrow. I can't thank you guys enough! Is there a chicken sexing for dummies I can review? Like I said this is my second week in chickens so my knowledge is next to nothing (ie what are you guys looking for with the tail feathers, color of the comb etc?)!!
