Quote: which lights work best in the cold?
Florescents, I'd think, since they don't generate much heat, if any. In extreme cold, a regular light could break when it first comes on, due to the vast temperature difference, I think. I once walked out of the house with a tobacco pipe going strong; it cracked pretty quick when it hit the cold winter air.

Isle Royale

Yellowstone is giardia prone, check out water filters for that. Here is a photo of the one I ended up carrying several years ago. If you are on horseback then it still might be your best choice. I always needed to balance ease of pumping with "Micron" filter ability, you need it to be fairly easy to pump so you drink enough. If it filters to well it clogs easily. the second photo below is nice, no pumping. if the advertisement claims "millions" of gallons then the water is clean before they start.

Wow !!!!!!!!
super trip, what is the date of the eclipse? my wife still backpacks so she is "up" on lightweight gear, I have lost track. Last time I hiked Mount Katahdin in Maine I decided to hang up the boots for good, she is planning a six week hike in June and July, CT, Mass., VT, NH
I have been saving $25 a month for a long time. The eclypse is August 21. It is a full solar eclipse the best viewing arc passes right over the Tetons.
