EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@Sally Sunshine
Legg's peafowl web site is not coming up this evening, might leave it off until the site works again, the Missouri Yearbook information would have a telephone number if someone wants to call

BTW, Banti, I saw you changed your avatar. You really are ready to hatch a bunch more chicks, aren't you?!

(Honestly, if I were getting more eggs I probably would have fired up my own 'bator already...)

Opinions anyone - is this frostbite on Monkey's comb? Housed in a well ventilated tractor coop, got down to 34F for a couple hours this am, saw this this afternoon... (His comb is SOOOOOO big! All my boys have huge combs because of the summer heat...)

Mayybe. :lol:

I really miss soft baby peeps and fluffy wings and sleepy heads..... :love

Can't go getting too excited tho.... These eggs on the way have multiple dings against surviving.

(Having an eeyore like perspective helps make me thrilled most of the time instead of disappointed :D)

Sorta looks like it, but why you'd be getting frostbite @ 34 I have no clue :hu Even my leghorns were fine down to -20......

what are some alternative methods of disinfecting your incubator for the first time? I read the "Notes" section however I do not utilize bleach or other chemicals in my home. I am an advocate for more natural remedies, I utilize Melaleuca products in my home for cleaning. Could ACV w/mother be used, or garlic and lemon peel?

You should try some essential oils. The most effective IMO is Eucalyptus oil.

Yeah, that's what I couldn't make sense of.

I successfully raised chickens through the winter in this same coop last year, no issues at all (in fact, they were the Naked Necks). And Tank has a big comb...

It just occurred to me - there is a tarp over hardware cloth as the roof, and the roof is slanted on the sides - I wonder if he's roosting nearer the side and his comb was touching cold HW cloth overnight? That's the only thing I can think of. The Naked Necks slept on the floor in a pile (weirdos...)

[@=/u/220854/DwayneNLiz]@DwayneNLiz[/@] Would you help this poor mobile user post the link that several people have asked for? The thread is saved in my subscriptions. The title is Permethrin Spray in the past and predators section. I would really appreciate it.

The directions call for 1/2 ounce (15 ml.) per bird. There's no way each bird got that much spray! I did use a stronger mix than recommended (16 ml) per half gallon water, rather than the 10 ml on the label. Poor math skills late at night. Each bird got a spritz on top on the roost, and then the roosts got sprayed, so the birds got more spray from underneath. Nobody moved, no muss, no fuss, all done in about ten minutes, including spraying the walls and bedding. Sixty-two birds, and a 16' x'24' coop. So far, too good to be true! Mary
I also wanted to thank you for sharing this info! We used this on nearly 80 birds (both bantam and standards). It was very easy with the sprayer to get the liquid to skin level under the vent and of course the quick spritz to the back. Our birds weren't bothered by the process either! We also removed all bedding from coops, and sprayed in corners, floors, roosts and inside nest boxes. I put down fresh bedding and added a light spray to the top as well. We were targeting Northern Fowl Mites. All birds tolerated the permethrin without any issues including two 2 day old chicks under a broody hen that was treated and several juvenile bantams. From what I can find online, it appears that the 10% permethrin spray has a 30 day residual effect which is fantastic! Here is a label pic of the Bayer version of the concentrate (same active ingredient as the Gordon's brand that I got from TSC) that states a 30 day residual for the insects and mites indicated:

Sorry it's not the best pic so here is the link to the page that has a link to view the label also: http://www.bayerlivestock.com/show.aspx/permectrin-ii
