I just went out with the red headlamp to double check how they sit on the roosts and the ventilation. Ventilation is as expected, very good, BUT - their tractor coop is one of the first I built before modification to add the roosts, and the roof is set a little lower than the other tractor coops, so less headroom. And indeed I found Monkey on one end of the roost - comb not touching the HW cloth when I looked, but easy to see how it might when he raised his head. I think this is what may have happened, comb touching very cold metal of HW cloth overhead. I think I may lower their roosts a couple inches.
Meanwhile, wondering how the comb will look tomorrow. It would be great if I got a "heads up" in this before any major stuff. (I don't care about appearance, but I'd rather him not be in pain or injured if avoidable.)

Good morning,
My bird's points were darker black and the points were lost. I would bet that your bird will keep the points but will have some skin flake off.
Thanks. they look about the same today, so hopefully all will be fine. I need to spend some time figuring what might have happened. I really do think he had his comb up against cold hardware cloth...
We lost our sweet dog, Bunny last night just a little after 11PM. Towards the end she was unconscious. I don't think she suffered too much. I'm convinced that she had a massive heart attack. She was a good, smart girl who loved her dog cookies and would bark at you until she got what she wanted. When she was just a year old I taught her how to ask for treats by sitting in front of the container and giving a little bark. That was all it took. Soon we were holding
'conversations' with one another. My dad was living with me at the time and his dementia made him sleep a lot so she was my company. It didn't take her long to learn that the louder she asked the faster she got what she wanted.
So many memories are flooding me right now. I just told my husband that it just didn't seem right that God gave us such a wonderful companion animal and then gave them such a brief walk upon this earth.
I am one eight Cherokee Indian, the last generation that can claim legal tribal status, although my Great Grand Mother Alice never enrolled. The Native Americans have a legend about the dog. When the Great Spirit made the heavens and earth and all things that lived upon it, he made man last and told him from that day forward man would forever be separated from the animals. To prove that, a deep chasm opened in the ground between man and all the creatures of the earth. At the last moment before the chasm grew to deep and wide, dog jumped over it and set down beside man.
Help! My hygrometer is broken! I accidentally dropped it in water while I was moving things around in the incubator (today is day 18) So I was moving the eggs to lay down, pumping up the humidity, laying down a safe surface for when they hatch, and outside of the incubator had my little bowl of water that I had been keeping in the incubator to keep the humidity around 25% (give or take) and dropped the hygrometer into it. It is a acurite batterery operated one. Dried it off as best I could, changed the battery, but now I can't get it to read right. Temp is not working on it, which is fine, it wasn't accurate anyway and I was using a probe thermometer the whole time. But now, I am assuming it's running about 20-25% off. What can I do to fix it? Or should I just assume it is 20-25% off and subtract that from what it's reading. Right now it is saying my humidity inside the incubator is 85%... Any ideas or advice would be helpful! Thank you so much in advance. I'd like to add that the soonest I could go and look for a new one would be tomorrow, which I plan on doing. I just know that right now is vital!

This brought to mind the "deer crossing call" on you tube which I had to listen to again as it is too hilarious.
The caller "Donna the deer lady" has a really good sense of humor about it and is totally sweet, as heard in follow up call.

Words cannot express how much I appreciate the kind words and support I've received from everyone today. It's been a rough day here for us. We have 5 cats and had 5 dogs. Bunny came into my life two years before I met my husband and was a gift from one of my nurses aides after the death of my mini schnauzer. She was only 5 weeks old and had waddled over to me, climbed into my lap and went to sleep. She could hardly walk, she was so little. We knew she was getting up there in age, knew she had old kidneys but her health had been stable lately and she had been running around the pasture with the other dogs just yesterday afternoon. We weren't expecting what happen and it completely blindsided us.
Our 4 remaining furry canine children are grieving, especially our 9 yr old Australian cattle dog who was her best friend and our 3 year old hound mix who was always arguing with her. We are trying to keep them busy and give them lots of love.
