MJ's little flock

This was the situation as I was leaving home this morning.

Yeh, they're on the table! I put some food and water outside their room in case they end up on the wrong side of the doorway.

Blossom was licking up a treat as I shut her into the spare bedroom.
Just in case anyone thinks I put them on the table, no. They flew to the table from the top of their cage.

They are good fliers.

It's good to know they'll be able to escape the hens if needs be!
Flying is an essential skill for the young ones. They need to be able to avoid the mean older ladies.

The little ones are moving out tonight! Their outside house is all fresh n clean. It includes the little coop and I've put a run around it to keep the big hens out until the little ones are ready. So that whole corner is now the kindergarten.

The move went well! There was some bewildered crying and some delight. When I left them, they were all cuddled up in a deep bed of sawdust with the heat plate nearby in case it's needed. I'll be up before dawn to make sure they're ok.

Such exciting times. I can wait to see photos of them in their new digs.

Only for the night I presume?
Probably no need for extra heat anymore during the day with your temps. They can keep each other warm too.

Schedule optimal temps for a small group of chicks (combination of 2 advices from hoogendoorn.nl and kippenforum.nl):
Week 1 - 36°C
2 - 34
3 - 31
4 - 28
5 - 25
6 - 22 with down, 20 with feathers

The chicks only need heat if the nights are cold after that. :
7 - minimum 15°C
8 - 10
9 - 5
10 - 0

When the temp at night is above 15°c its better to switch it off with 7 weeks.

We have similar tables. I have found my chicks don’t read the tables!
