EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

...

I'm still doing individual weights, because of the experience of having significant variable weight loss (in the R-Com) between eggs of different shapes (all blue). I worry about differences between eggs. Once I do more hatching, I'll have a better sense of both my equipment and what different eggs need...

The circle on the egg is a crutch for me - I'm still new at this.

I get that. When I have a small setting I do individual weights. I have on occasion had a couple eggs that were losing weight way faster than others.

But the thing is - what do you do about it? If you have some losing weight correctly, some too light and some too heavy, which way are you going to go with humidity?
There's nothing you can do about it unless you have 3 incubators with high, low and moderate humidity.

Quote: Well in that case, I had set eggs from hens who were with a rooster who was attacked by dogs, so I was very anxious to have that hatch go right. And I included some eggs that I otherwise might not have chosen to incubate (rounded eggs). AND it was the first incubation in the R-Com (in which I now only hatch). By having those weights as well as air cell marks, I did identify that the corners and edges of the incubation area were more problematic (wasn't just the round eggs that had issues in those locations, and halfway through, I started rotating all of those eggs around to try to even it out). There was also discussion of changing local humidity, though it was a little too late in my case. So, it was important for the first use of that piece of equipment.

Even if you can't do anything, there may be something learned by experience, I think (at least for me) - e.g., how quickly certain eggs (small eggs, eggs of a given color, etc.) lose moisture compared to others. I think when you are incubating homogenous eggs, with familiar equipment, perhaps the individual weights are less helpful.

Oh, and individual weights very early on in my first incubation helped me figure out that I had an inaccurate scale!

Winter solstice was at 4:44 this morning here. That means tomorrow will be longer - and every day to follow till summer.
Hopefully the birds get the memo and start picking up production soon as well.

Thank you :hugs
Yeah, I knew you'd pull that back out on me. Hey, at least I tried... :he I'm still doing individual weights, because of the experience of having significant variable weight loss (in the R-Com) between eggs of different shapes (all blue). The circle on the egg is a crutch for me - I'm still new at this. That was EXACTLY my thought!!! Those two eggs rode around in my shirt pocket all evening warming up while I was making the fruitcake - if they hatch, I suspect there will be fruitcake-related names involved... :lau Fruitcakes all wrapped in cheesecloth, soaked in brandy and put up for long storage. I can't think of a better thing to do on the longest night of the year. (I think I may need more brandy, though... ) I'd better start winding down for bed. Goodnight, all! :frow - Ant Farm
Um, yeah, you tried. 'Mornin
