EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

It bothered me for a very long time. So now I keep them in their pen bringing weed clippings to them. Roofers are long gone but I still have too many other critters here.

I have a large fenced in area that I used to let them run in but a large hawk/eagle got three of the Orpington hens. It left them in the run as they were too large for them to fly off with. I need to come up with a way to cover the top as I've done on the smaller coops run. Just cost too much to completely cover that size of run. I might do smaller fenced areas inside the large run.

when my home was being built the contractor was very careful with tools in his truck, I saw him double check the locks when the roofers were here.

My current view from my deck...the girls are now searching for clues as to what got the rooster.

(The old privacy fence you see just past my daughter's clubhouse is just a divider I have between yards, it is not meant to be predator proof lol).

We are training our dog to watch for hawks. We use a football to throw it in the air and teach her to bark at it and alert to aerial predators. We have big trees, that cover our free-range area, and we have a lot of hay fields and easier targets. I see hawks circling the hay fields alot, but so far, none have tried to go after chickens.... my silkies worry me. I hear they are hawk magnets, so i plan on giving them a covered coop and only free range if i'm there.

That wouldn't go over here well.... it would get stuck in our coop and then the dog would get it.

We have a small door, just small enough for the chickens to get into it, and keep the goats out of it. I suppose it helps that we have dog-looking creatures with our coop, too. Keeps the birds away.

opinion : Salary is so low that they can't afford tools or food. My first job after high school I worked with low paid carpenters who found out I was going fishing, one guy ask me for the fish heads for soup for his family.
Weird. I always thought of roofers making decent money.
