I have a much nicer version of this (pre-chickens):

My neighborhood is the oldest in the area, so the lots are unusually big, esp those in my area of the street (mine is 1.6 acres, neighbors on sides are also 1.5-2 acres each, which is crazy-huge for being in the city limits). Our back yards back up against another neighborhood with much much smaller lots (postage sized back yards). All of us have left the back part relatively wild all along the street - lots of wildlife. It's very nice. ANYWHO....

I was working in my garden one day (large garden in the "back 40") when I heard something, and I saw someone. I investigated, and it was two boys building a little fort in my yard. I asked them where they lived - right over there (behind me). Why were they there? The person who leased their house to them told them my yard was A GREENWAY!!!!!

I was nice - I said, no, it's not a greenway, it's my property, and that I wasn't mad at them, but they really couldn't play in my yard. (I wasn't trying to be an ogre - it was and still is wild back there, and I didn't want the liability if one of them got hurt or bit by a snake). The next door neighbor around the same time found older kids in their yard. Drove them off, found a lot of beer cans and a few mattresses in the back of their property - pretty horrifying for them.

A year later I had an 8 foot game fence around my property (at great great cost, but with a lot of peace of mind).

(I would love to buy one of my next-door neighbors' lots for more space, but alas, they have large families to whom they would pass the property on.)

I should add.... You know all the freaky stuff about my house? Yeah, I bought it for the 1.6 acres in town (across the street form work!!!!) and several 100+ year old oaks. Houses come and go, but it's all about the land and trees. I remember thinking, "I'll friggin' CAMP on this property, but I'm not passing this up!" Realtor said the house needed too much work. I said, don't care, I want the lot.

(Remind me of this the next time I complain that an electrician has to come look at some wacko thing the previous owner did...)
