What I use after hatching so many marans, I needed a good one!
its a 3000 lums/lumens I researched to find the brightest I could get in the most handy as well as cheap! I have bought up to 1500 lums and couldnt see into dark blue eggs, now they look like I am candling a duck egg, very quick fast and done. Love it!
Well worth the money spent and the rechargeable batteries rock!

The absolute best candler you can get is an overhead projector cheap from a yard sale. Laugh all you want but it's the honest to God's truth.

I've gotten lazy and if I candle, I use the LED app on my iPhone 6 Plus. Except for BCM's, they get the projector.

After viewing Sally's mic stand candler and seeing the proper way to candle, we rigged up a flashlight to a music stand. This is a 320 lumen light with the lens removed so it makes a good seal.

A
BCM egg at day 7 (all the pics are day 7). Lights not strong enough to see veins, but we know there is a chick.
I got a new little flashlight for candling but wanted a softer cushion and a way to create less gapping between the egg and the end of the flashlight.

I was trying to think of what I had on hand that could work - weather stripping! It's cushiony (yes, that's a word lol) and sticky on one side, so easy to apply & work with - however, I decided I wanted to secure mine better with super glue once I had it in place.

So I super glued the weather stripping around the end of the flashlight and voila! A perfect cushion and great seal on the egg for candling! Even if you don't have weather stripping on hand, it's super cheap and easy to pick up!

Here is my candler. I used a piece of a blue pool noodle and some electrical tape. The foam part os great. My husband is letting me borrow his flashlight, he is kinda a flashlight hoarder IMO, so my foam part is removable. I could us a stonger light but the cover is cheap, awesome and temporary.

I know I don't explain things the best, here is a photo..like I said, have been using this for yrs. And yes, that tape is fine, gets a bit warm if I take a long time candling, say..30 eggs. Never been a problem overheating though. Cynthia12

I just clip it on the bottom drawer when I want to candle.

HOW TO CANDLE EGGS

There are two different ways to effectively candle eggs. One pertains to shipped eggs and the other to non-shipped eggs.

When candling shipped eggs FOLLOW this:
1. With a flashlight ALWAYS keep the eggs upright, large/fat/air cell up, its best to leave them in the egg carton. ALWAYS candle from the FAT end/air cell so it shines DOWN through that open space into the egg, AGAIN, put flashlight on FAT end/aircell and hold egg upright/fat end up and do not turn or rotate egg, rotate flashlight!

2. When candling shipped eggs extra care must be taken to not dislodge the aircell when candling.

When candling non-shipped eggs FOLLOW this:
1. With a flashlight or other candling aperture hold the egg at a slight angle, large end to the light. Making sure your fingers don’t block the light, turn the egg slowly until either you see something or you’re certain there’s nothing to see.

2. Again candle carefully so as not to dislodge anything.

This is a good short article on reasons to NOT candle too much.

FIRST IMAGE....
is only to show you how they cup the end of the flashlight in their palm to protect egg and send light down into egg.

THE SECOND IMAGE shows you how to hold the egg UPRIGHT and candle down into it!
AGAIN, ALWAYS keep fat end up, at candles when they are messed up from shipping!

LIKE THIS ONE!!!!

Another thing I will say AGAIN!!

THE CANDLE DAYS 7 14 18 ARE NOT SET IN STONE!!!

Candle check a few eggs, every other day after day 12 and follow air cells a bit closer!
You will find you have more time to catch issues and adjust humidity!!

I forgot to post pics of the sharpee color eggs hatching. Final tally, red didn't hatch, but black and pink did, plus several others.

Technical difficulties!

I got this email off eBay that started these test.

(I am not happy with 5 of the eggs being marked with a maker. Maker contaminants hatching eggs. Pencil should be the only thing used on eggs. I will try my best to hatch these, but I would like replacements for at least those 5 eggs that you contaminated from the start. I usually have good hatches from healthy eggs but yours are contaminated and thin shelled which is another sign of unhealthy eggs. I will not leave feedback until this is resolved. As of right now I am not a happy customer. }:()

so will talk to my family my nephew decided to do is own test. well being a boy he went all out. one egg is sharpie and one is dry eraser marker. Both hatched out great. one pic you can see there is no marker bleeding though the egg shell. Egg were but in a sportsman bator and 21 day later go to beautiful chicks. Named sharpie and easier.
