Hi, in from chores again.. For you southerners I thought I would post the beginning of a post to the Minnesota peoples...
What a great day it ended up being 18 degrees no wind and the sun is out. I spend a couple hours catching up on things I could not get done when it was cold out. I started the crematory, JJ, that Toad and the hen from yesterday are now ashes to be spread somewhere.

I know some of you boiled peanut eaters will go nuts thinking 18 degrees can feel so nice and warm...:lau

As far as sneaking me a dux, that's fine with me. I believe there is less than a 1% chance man causes global warming, but incase I am wrong I will burn the dux feathers and grease in the hopes of speeding up the process. I want palm trees here!
18?? No fair, you braggart you :rant My toes are blue right now- nuff said.

EEEEEEEEEEEE.

So I have a chicken with sour crop and read lots of remedies. Would like any of your input on what has worked for you.
Sour crop is basically a yeast infection in the chicken’s crop. It occurs most often because of an impacted crop that hasn’t been cleared, and yeast begins to grow and feed on the food that is stuck in the crop. I did the monistat (womans suppositories) but I have since read an update that I thought was good

I'm only replying to this old post to try & help others. I HAVE consulted with an Avian Vet(30yrs.+exp.).& I'm also a Med. Asst. I was orig. using Monistat 3 Suppositories cut into 1/3rds(1 piece morn./eve.) because my Crops Hen was Bloated-Crop farting when pressure applied along with problems breathing,Thickened Crop wall in bottom R. Corner of Crop(May feel like a gristly lump) . You will probably also see-notice excessive wetness(Mucus looks like clear human snot) around the Mouth/Throat. They will more than likely exhibit clustered Breathing sounds. The Hen has a reaction & produces mucus in attempt to wall off Mold/Fungus. You will probably see excessive White SLIME in Fecals(Not the Normal Urea look). I started treating with the Monistat which Helped & in MINOR problems you will probably have success(GOOD READING ON FUNGAL ON POULTRY PEDIA.COM).
I had an ongoing -Long Term Mold exposure that I wasn't aware of in my Chickens Roof hidden by tiles due to a SM. DRIP that I fixed but the Spores kept incubating-growing. I consulted the Avian Vet & she stated that Miconozole prevents Fungus from reproducing but in a serious Fungal Crop situation it may NOT clear it up. I had this experience. I had used a GREAT Product on Prior when I Didn't know what it was & its called DENEGARD(QC Supply.com see reviews on site) . Its GREAT for Respiratory & even quite a few Intestinal issues. On 1 Hen she tested + for Yeast in FECAL but Neg. on Crop. Her Back end was wet all the time. The Nice thing about Denegard is its Drying affect(Salt aspect) & its components Potassium Fumarate is used in Humans for Severe Asthma. In many cases when Hens have Crop Fungus they will aspirate food into the Lungs & then cause a Bacterial infection. Fungus is also affected because it doesn't have that warm MOIST base it needs to continue Growing.
I was prescribed Fluconazole for 8 days. You can only get this through a Vet. This is a systemic drug & also treats Aspergillosis but the better one is Itraconazole but is VERY expensive. I noticed after day 5 it was better but then stagnated. I started the Denegard which IS a form of antibiotic(more so an Antibacterial) & started noticing Positive changes. Now here is where BOTH my Vet & I are shaking our heads. I researched Gentian Violet. I knew I had some already & I thought "Why Not" lets see if by swabbing the Mouth/Throat with a Q-Tip with Gentian will have any affect (be sure if you try this to Hold that Q-tip firm & DON't Get it DRIPPING wet). I noticed the mass(thickened Crop wall) became smaller just after swabbing in Morn,/eve. MY THOUGH which I bounced off the Vet is Due to its ANTIBACTERIAL Properties. It was a Good way to let me know that I was dealing with a BACTERIAL/FUNGAL Situation. It also cleared up the Throat area enough so I could better administer the Denegard mix(Via an Enema Bottle-SMALL SPURTS INTO MOUTH/Coaxing hand downward on Crop) to help her swallow. Also a gentle massage on Crop will expel the Air & allow solids/Liquids to settle SO THEY DON'T Aspirate.
I know this is a Lot of Info. but I fought for "2YRS" NOT KNOWING this was Fungal. Even the Avian Vet thought Fungal AT FIRST but then questioned when it kept coming back(thought it was CRD). We initially tried Baytril in conjunction with LA200 Inj. for 10 Days & it worked. Then I had success with LA200/Denegard but they got it back again because they had the ongoing exposure. I had 4-5 Hens put Down & even with the Darn Necropsy they didn't see Fungal(UC DAVIS/FDA Program out of all places not to get a straight answer). I can say now I have quite a bit of knowledge on this subject.

IF you look at the Monistat treatment Blogs it will tell you to flush with an Epsom Salt Mixture 1st. day & then start Monistat.
The Objective is to cut through some of that Mucus so the Monistat can reach the Fungus better.
IF you Don't have or can't afford an avian Vet then I WOULD try the Monistat 3 but that can be expensive too(Try Walmart & get Generic). Other things you can try but I was told by the Vet that they are more preventative than a cure is APPLE CIDER Vinegar WITH "The Mother". Braggs has a REALLY GOOD product. I DID use this in the Beginning & it DID have some affect(Instructions on Poultry Pedia). Copper sulfate (was told) is VERY Old School & you can use it -try it but this along with Gentian Violet were used way back when Antifungals weren't avail. I had some success also with Chlorhexadrine & IF YOUR OTHER HENS don't have it yet you would want to put a few drops in the water to prevent the spread of Fungus. This Mucus I mentioned makes contact with food & then others eat it. Hens with Bad crop problems tend to pick up food & drop it(espec. Layer Pellet). Try to separate the MAIN HEN Affected & feed a MEAT BIRD/Layer CRUMBLE Mix(less sugar the Better!). They still need some Layer for Health purposes(Calcium, etc).
You have to be dedicated if your dealing with a Serious Fungal Crop situation. MAKE DARN SURE THOUGHT THAT IF YOUR AFFECTED BIRD IS HANGING WITH THE OTHERS THAT YOU NEED TO TREAT THAT COMMUNITY WATER BOWL & THE BEST THING WOULD BE TO GET A BOTTLE OF OXINE(chlorhexadrine). Amazon.com third party sells it..IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE DENEGARD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ANTIFUNGAL THEN DO NOT USE CHLORHEXADRINE OR IT WILL KILL OFF THE DENEGARD DEFEATING THE PURPOSE.
I ONLY HAVE 2 HENS/1 ROO & JUST HAD TO GET MORE FLUCONAZOLE. JUST SO YOU HAVE AN IDEA(but I'am in CA. which I'm probably paying more) I'm paying $20 for an 8 day treatment 1x a day liquid. I have a more serious case so longer treatment is needed & HOPING that the Fungi don't have a resistance. The BEST is Itraconazole but on avg. OUT HERE its $6 a DAY for that PER HEN!
TRY THE MONISTAT OR YOU CAN TRY "AVIAN WEB". YOU WILL SEE THE PRODUCTS ARE GEARED MORE TOWARD PARROTS,ETC. BUT WHETHER IT BE A HEN OR PARROT YOU CAN USE THESE PRODUCTS BUT I SUGGEST YOU CONSULT WITH THEM ON THE PRODUCT/DOSE.
I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU ALSO CLICK ON " FUNGAL INFECTIONS" ON POULTRY PEDIA.COM ITS A GREAT SITE & IF YOU CLICK ON THE LINKS FOR FUNGAL MYCOSIS,THRUSH,ETC. IT WILL GIVE YOU SOME GREAT LINKS TO READ UP.
YOU CAN ALSO CONFIRM FOR YOURSELF ON SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE MENTIONED ABOVE.
GOOD LUCK/GOD BLESS! THE CHICKEN LOVER!

IF YOU NEED HELP,ADVICE I DON'T MIND BEING CONTACTED.
I WILL NOT ADVISE ON ANYTHING I HAVEN'T DONE MYSELF OR NOT FEEL CONFIDENT OF.
I ALSO WILL STATE I'M NOT A VET BUT HAVE GAINED A LOT OF KNOWLEGE OVER THE PAST 12YRS.
I STILL HAVE A HEN THAT IS 12YO. & LAYS !

p.s. if you free range keep your hens away from fruit trees that are producing it will feed the fungus(NO CORN/Seed).
Mine were going hard for my olive tree. I realized after reading the reason was that the olives contain COPPER,IRON,CARBS. (this was Before I started the Fluconozole) They were defeating their attempt to cure themselves with the copper. The Carbs turn to Sugar. PLAIN GREEK YOGURT WITH LIVE CULTURES can be beneficial IF treating with a Fungal OR AFTER you are Done with Antibiotic usage but don't go overboard. Small amts. 1/2tsp a day. Plain or not still has sugar but in sm. amts. it IS good for Beneficial Bacteria. IF USING DENEGARD & YOU ARE FREE RANGING & Have a Dog your hens will try & access the Dogs water. The Denegard has a bitter taste so I suggest sm. amts. of SWEET & LOW to try & make it more palatable(Yes you will need to dab a bit on your tongue just rinse). DO NOT use ANY Substitute.
If you go to the Denegard site you will see they only suggest a couple. Its not the most user friendly so I will leave the dose amts. You will see it states "NOT FOR U.S. Residents" This is because its FDA APPROVED HERE BUT NOT FOR CHICKENS which doesn't mean squat in this case. See the 5 star comments on QC Supply & MY VET recommended it when we thought it was CRD. you can start with 2cc per QT. of water. If you see progress but after 3 days you reach a stagnant point you can go 2.5-3cc. it will make it more bitter so a bit more sweet & low is needed. YOU MAY need to CAREFULLY administer the stubborn ones or ones that are having severe problems swallowing just remember to coax that throat/crop. I REALLY like using a Cleaned Enema bottle($2 generic just dump the contents). The Bottle has a RUBBER Bladder & its so easy to control the flow pattern to what the hen can tolerate. Each hen SHOULD consume "AT LEAST" 1cc of Liquid mix on a daily basis. I also like to have an Enema bottle handy for any other Crop/Intestinal Block where I mix Mineral oil with water & administer.
MAKE SURE TO CLEAN TIP IF USING ON MULTIPLE HENS. FOR SEVERE RESPIRATORY OR CRD
YOU WANT TO START WITH 3CC PER QT. THE GREAT THING ABOUT DENEGARD IS THE STUDIES SHOW RESISTANCE TO DENEGARD IS VERY LOW SO THIS IS WHY I LIKE TO KEEP IT HANDY. IT REALLY HAS A WIDE VARIETY OF USES & IT CAN ALSO BE USED THERAPEUTICALLY FOR CHRONIC RESPIRATORY ILLNESS AT THE 2CC LEVEL TO PREVENT OUTBREAKS DURING STRESS TIMES! ok i have said enough

Hey sunshine, how goes it?

Hi Kristen good luck with chores.

5 sons sorry about the deer. Really glad he didn't come inside the car. My friend at work had a Canadian Goose hit his car on the top. $1200 damage I think was the final results

Good morning Abi coffees not been regular these days.

The list is huge today. Including getting numbers down on chickens and the garden seeds are coming up. As well as weeds. We are in the 70's this week for the first time this year and growth is tremendous.
