EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Quote: One of the faculty here (can't remember if it was a surgeon or anesthesiologist) was jogging one morning along the sidewalk about two blocks from work. Someone happened along and found him down. He had stepped on a rattlesnake - almost died. He survived after a VERY long time in the hospital, but ended up retiring, I think.

(I cut my grass because of the snakes as well.)
That's one reason I mow whatever grows naturally here, rather than spending good money on seed that may or may not germinate. The native grass has evolved to handle the temperature swings in this part of the country, w/o additional watering, and stays green, for the most part, all year.
When I say "cut my grass", I should clarify that this is just the green stuff that comes up. It's not actually GRASS. It's weeds. But green is green, and I like it.

It hits 90F here in March, April if we're lucky. It hits 100F in May (though not consistently over 100 day after day until June or July). There is a reason that the book "Growing Food in a Hotter, Drier Land" is filed with my gardening books.

When I was a kid Mom always made my birthday cake with a hard caramel icing . I'm talking icing that would break off in chunks, like peanut brittle. Try as she might, DW can't come close. She thought it might have been an OOPS on Mom's part, but she repeated it year after year.

I'd like to have a recipe if any of you have one.
OMG, me me me me me me!!!!!!!! That is my FAVORITE kind of cake, but I haven't had one since I won it in a church raffle decades ago... My family is full of great cooks, and we have a cake that has icing that's the chocolate version of that, but no one does the caramel one. PLEASE give me the recipe!!!!!

The northern above the crappie and perch is bigger. 43" caught thru the ice. Had no gaff it tore me up a little. That fish and perch (12.5") and bottom crappie (14") all came out of the same ice whole in the same week. The weekend before the wife caught the 15.5" crappie. The northern you don't want to meet at night I caught on a fly-in trip in Canada eh!
@5Sons Coop , @kwhites634 - I'll be your fishing buddy!!!! I love catching crappie! I use a fishing kayak (though I haven't been out in ages).

This is me and a big black drum I pulled in at Port Aransas (yes, I really, really did land that thing myself, though I had a lot of coaching and cheering):

And this is an 18" red drum that I caught in the salt flats with my fishing kayak, using live shrimp bait (you can't keep them unless they're over 20"). Red drum have the BEST fight - this thing felt 5 times this size on the end of the line:

I put my chicks out with mph last night in the main coop. They are three weeks old, but I have never used one of these or had chicks in my new brooder so I have been worried today. It is not as cold as it is up north, but the high today has been 31 plus nasty wind chill. I just hope the heating pad works for them. Real feel temperature is 21, and they have been in the spare bathroom till last night.
@Fire Ant Farm Missed you today.

Sorry - really busy day at work.
I'm scared. I ordered 15 turkey poults, and ordered them last year, with out really thinking it through. So either A. We bitcher ASAP when they hit about 12-15 weeks.... or sell poults asap when tehy come in, because feeding 20+ adult size turkeys is a bit much for me. My flock of 5 right now is about right. And, my Tom, is not aggressive to anyone, which makes him a good tom.
I wish the timing was different. If I didn't have >100 chickens and chicks here (and wasn't therefore hyperventilating every time I think about it), I would love to try turkeys. As it is, I'll be lucky not to lose my mind as is...

I miss tv
I don't. Haven't had it in ages. I stream stuff sometimes.

BYC is a good motivator trying to keep up with Dax and Kristin is killing me.

My friend at work always looks at me in astonishment whenever I'm sharing something that I think is normal, and says, "You are always doing something interesting..."

First- 90°F in March is something my brain can't understand. Second- That is a HUGE fish!! Third- Your snakes terrify me. Fourth- I am now hooked on the Red Green show, thanks to you.

Saltwater fishing is very appealing, but just can't get myself to drive past all the good places between here and they. I live in a fishermans paradise. Lots of lakes and 1.5 hrs to Lake Superior and 2 hrs to Lake Michigan.

.That black drum's almost as big as you are!
I'd love a crack at Red Drum (Redfish) on bass tackle.

Lol. Sounds about right. Nice catch! My brother caught a big drum on a crawfish once.

Hi Kristin correct on the egg nest and snakes. Neighbors daughter lifted the lid on her nest box and was just about ready to pick up eggs till she saw the rattler. Far too close. Sad about the runner. It happens here on the trail for the lake quite often. Some one will jump over a log and bingo. The red drum is a cool looking fish

Plus Lake Geneva, Lake Delavan, Tschigan, Powers & half a dozen others I've fished up there
