My Costa Rican style ceviche.

I wanted some sea bass but the best sushi grade non-oily white fish available was hake.



Raw hake chopped and marinated in lime juice.


Other key ingredients. Cilantro, serrano chilies, roma tomatoes, white, red and green onions.

Have you checked what the temperature is under it when the ambient is in the 30s?
I think the premier heat plates are only recommended down to 40F. My Ohio Brooders work very well when the building temp gets down to the 20s.

I'm with you on not liking anything over 80F.

In CR you can pick your favorite temperature range by selecting the apropos elevation.
Like the 90s? Live along the coast. Like the 80s? Live just a bit higher. Like the 70s? Live in the central valley. Like the 60s? live farther up the volcanic slopes. Like the 40s? Live on the slopes of Chiropo, Poas or Irazu.

These birds all hatched during 2016.


The older birds and the chicks from October-February live on the opposite side of the property.

Snow still coming down Whites?

Around here we are calling it the winter that never was or the year without winter.
We had our biggest snowfall of the season yesterday. It was 1.5" and it was gone by the end of the day.
We've had a total of 4 nights in the single digits this winter. Usually there are plenty below 0. Sometimes a week at a time when it doesn't get above 0.

Saltwater fishing is very appealing, but just can't get myself to drive past all the good places between here and they. I live in a fishermans paradise. Lots of lakes and 1.5 hrs to Lake Superior and 2 hrs to Lake Michigan.

I've fished my share of lakes but I much prefer stream fishing.

Keep up with me? Who wants to especially on days like today. Up at 4:15 milk goats be at work at 5:15 work till seven, get home milk and do chores for two hours, sit for half an hour checking BYC and lighting the fire. Now it is past time to go out and feed the last bottle to my kids before I can collapse and repeat. I am so sick of my hours. It is time for a new job so I have time for something other than chores like riding. I am trying to hang on till after my vacation.

Best be thinning them out, or you'll have nothing but stunted fish. If it was mine, and I didn't have time myself, I'd open it up to fishing by the locals with the stipulation that they keep what they catch.

Or what I did was introduce more aggressive predator species. White bass, striped bass, northern pike, chain pickerel, walleye, etc..
The problem with the traditional stocking they do around here (Largemouth bass, bluegill/redear, channel cat) is that once the bluegill get over 4 or 5 inches, the Largemouth don't eat them because of the spines. Then you have a slot limit where there are bluegill spawning but not growing because of the limit of available food.

The best way to start a new pond/lake is to first bring in a variety of forage animals with lots of cover and nursery areas for fry and insects/crustaceans.
Depending on the size, depth and water feeding the body of water, you can add tadpoles, crawfish, clams, snails, (being careful not to introduce invasive species) provide cover areas for water insects. Then add a variety of minnow species. The next year, fingerling size predators along with fry size bluegill, redear, crappie, etc..
The insects and minnows will provide food for the more aggressive predators while the other feed fishes get established.
