EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@BantyChooks Can I join? I currently have 23 eggs that were locked down on Sunday. 14 have hatched, and there are still eggs with pips. I have 37 eggs that I have to lock down today. I have 21 eggs on day 11. Lastly, I have 32 eggs due to hatch Easter.

Thanks!!!

Bugs on trees - my grandma always used dirty dishwater to throw on her plants, and her lawn. Greenest section of lawn was where she threw out her dishwater. So, that's what we use for bug control - dish soap mixed well with water.

Update:
I couldn't see through the monitor because the power went out at our house for 3 hours. Luckily it only got down to 84, but it may have killed the hatching chicks. I do not hear chirping, but the temp is rising. We left early for the chickens and will be getting home about three hours earlier. Hopefully both chicks make it.
update?
That is the Brinsea Octagon Advanced, it has a fan.

HAS anyone ever seen/ had a chick like this?

I hatched this polish yesterday, and it hatched just fine with no issues. But, today I noticed that it's head was a bit bigger than the otheres. Well, I picked it up and saw that it only has 1 eye and a lump on the other side! It is walking around just fine and none of the other chick are picking on it. But what do I do? Do I keep it? Do I cull it?
no, cull, sorry

bet you'd be cute in those!

40 Black copper Marans are on day 22. I have one chick and 2 external pips that quit. I held the humidity at 35-40 and the temp held well at 99.5 never dropping under 99 or going over 100. At lockdown I raised the humidity to 65 with a couple spikes to 70. I am using a foam gator with a fan. Any suggestions...hard to reframe from assisting at this point. I did not candle because it was to hard to see in the dark eggs.
did you calibrate? i would up .5* next time
I can't be of much help. I have over 50 eggs in a LG. 36 are on about day 6. I thought the rest were due tomorrow night. I went up to turn the younger eggs and add water. As I was moving the eggs around, I felt a bump. It was a pip and I could see the beak. I misted the whole thing, put some water in the troughs, quickly turned the 36, misted again and closed up. I came back down to look at the incubation countdown timer and they're due in 8 hours and 40 minutes. What a dummy I am.
Too much stuff going on in my life. Not to mention that I really don't have anywhere to put the birds. I better start selling and butchering chickens.
oops

I have been watching every video I find reading every website.instead of saying all this negative stuff why not wish me luck and hope it makes it.and go great job.atleast I'm not like most of those other kids that sit on there video games 24/7 and don't like going outside are getting out and seeing all the diffrente nature
good luck CH, i hope it makes it and survives, but i hope you know how difficult it will be
ok we use small single headlamps enough to feed and water but not to light the area! I did purchase two of those solar lights, but we put one near the trash cans and one at the goats so certainly not covering the area
wolf pee, and solar lights that look like wolf eyes at the right height
Having the bears in the area is quite scary. One completely tore a gals coop apart in Penryn just a few miles east of me. There isn't a coop or house for that matter built strong enough. I have lights both sides of the barn to help but like you said it doesn't cover enough. I've actually got it switched from the bedside in case something is out there.
bears are evil, but cute when little
see above post to sally
my humidity gage shows 54%
but is it calibrated? do you remember the salt baggie method to calibrate?
Friday morning while doing chores last pregnant goat had her kids :

2 bucklings and one doeling, doeling in the middle.
awwww super cute
what breed is this chicken
whered you get it?
cockerel too
Hi, I'm in desperate need of some help!!!... I've been hatching consistently every weekend for the past 6 weekends and I cannot for the life of me figure out why I'm getting such poor hatches!!! I usually set about 2 dozen to hatch every weekend and I usually only get 1/3 of those eggs to develope full term, and then of those that develope only a handful hatch!? Sometimes I get some sticky chicks and a few with curled toes, also... I candle each week when I set the next batch, and what I'm not understanding is how come of all the eggs I see developing full term I only get a few chicks (a handful, usually) to successfully hatch!?
My dad and I repaired a sportsman 1202 cabinet incubator and have been running it at 99.5 with a humidity around 40-50 and increase humidity during hatches. I supplement my birds with red cell (iron) as I was told it would create more vigorous chicks and better hatches (i've had a smidge more chicks hatch using this)... I collect eggs twice a day, and store them on an egg turner for no more than a week. My birds are under natural and artifical light for 15hrs a day and get a 20% protein diet alongside oats and the iron supplement. They have adequate housing and free range when the weather is nice. The eggs being incubated are LF faverolles eggs. I keep hitting rut after rut with these birds and I really just want to hatch out a couple hundred of these before summer! I NEED help! Thank you!
i think you got a lot of good advice, so i will just say good luck
Fancy chicken try not using the spray, calibrate the hygrometers even thought they both read the same. They could both be off by 15%. Run a test in your other incubator. The hens put an anti bacterial on their shells and the spray may be doing more harm than good. I have never sprayed mine. I also don't wash them however I do get the cleanest eggs possible.
i agree, dont wash next time

mornin whites! she was crying before school this morning. She really did alot on Sat and then Sunday she wasnt feeling good at all. We dont have a clue what up with her, when I start to believe its all in her head, she shows signs that it is something else, example of playing outside for the first time all winter Saturday and then getting hit with pain during the night again and then all Sunday. It is freaking me out because I dont know which way to turn or who to turn to. Doc said he ordered Toxicity tests but I asked that he let me know when in system so I can get her there but no response ughhhhh

Ugh - So, my pygmy gave birth to twins. She just abandoned them. didn't cleanthem up, didn't help them with the afterbirth, so one still was stuck in the sac, and the other was barely alive. I brought it inside and washed it off and got an ounce of warm goats milk into it. Now I have to go milk her to keep her from getting engorged or getting mastitis.

First time mom, and she picks the morning I'm trying to get back to the hospital to go see my son, to give birth and be a bad mom....
ugh, so sorry

Morning all!

It's official that Abi's ducks have trained me. I make them a soup every morning and night to make sure the one with the broken bill is able to eat, and they have figured out the schedule, and gone so far as to insist that I give them their soup before I even feed the chickens. They have no problem quacking loudly to tell me I am late with their soup! Funny ducks! My old goose finally joined them and they all seem to be getting along just fine.
lol smart ducks
Generally, she could be rebred in 8 weeks or so if we lose all the kids. However, we want to milk her, so I'd probably wait about 4 months before drying her up and trying once more time before selling her. It's her first time, and she's not very bright compared to some of my other goats. So maybe she's just... slow?

i hope so
Day 23 black copper Marans, 40 eggs. I got a better light. 15 egg were not fertile. There is an inconsistency in air cell size. Some of the air cells seem to be way off to the side. They were in a rotating tray. Can anyone tell anything from these picks? Also one is still alive what do I do with that?
wow, 15 not fertile? i would try to get a free dozen from those people, and UNWASHED too
I get it.

out of ovates
My runner eggs are at the end of day 23. I candled them tonight and two of them are just completely black! I can see veins on the pointy end so they are definitely alive. Are they getting in the hatch position?
probably, update??

So - I'm pretty sure the goat's were premature, which is why she abandoned them. One wasn't fully "ready" looking if that makes sense? and the other isn't mature enough to walk. He's sure *trying* to live, and he eats like a champ, but he doesn't have the strength to stand on his feet for more then about 30 seconds.... so i'm hoping if I get him strong, he'll develop and catch up to what he needs to be. If he survives, hubby already said we could fix him and just keep him as a pet.

A preemie pet for our preemie toddler. ^.^ He's already been named Tarzan.
cute, hope he makes it for you
Has anybody every had or seen a chicken growing an extra toenail? At first I thought it was a feather, but it is curled and the other foot has ones as well. Larry is Strange!
lol nope
Hello, Salley sunshine, I'm needing your advice and expertise! I talked to you about my rotator being off for a little over 24hrs on day 7-8. It seems one egg has a loose air sac and most of the others have weird looking air sacs which makes me think the chicks will
Have a difficult time hatching. What do I do??
nothing at this point, but maybe try hatching upright, as MC suggested
GOOD MORNING, MY LOYAL SUBJECTS! MAY TODAY BRING YOU LOTS OF MATH, LANGUAGE ARTS, READING, LUNCH AND NAP TIME!!
LOL

Good morning all!

I woke up this morning and found an egg carton on the table with 4 big white, messy eggs in it. I know that someone DH works with has a pair of Pekin ducks since he's been asking advice and talking to DH about it for months so I'm assuming they are Pekin eggs. I'm also guessing that they're here for me to hatch lol. I've never incubated a duck egg. Is there anything I need to do that's different or can I just throw them in with everything else?
i would sponge for the last 4 days before lock down but thats it, helps to prevent stick chicks
I have a MRI today wonder if they will let me bring the eggs that didn't hatch.
good luck

Sneak the eggs under your hospital gown, they will never notice.....

Look at that little lovey dovey honeypot snuckums poopies mama baby girl/boy!!!
when did you become a female? or did someone hack your account?

This is a 1st for me. The flash washed it out a bit, and I don't know how to correct that. but the near end of this freshly laid (as in some time after I collected yesterday evening) is perfectly smooth, as you'd expect it to be; the lower portion (which appears considerably darker, but really isn't) has a rougher texture. What appears in the photo as an irregular band goes completely around the shell. The only thing I can liken the band to is the cluster of eggs that some common local insect lays on tree leaves.

Any ideas?
outta paint
Speaking of Hyacinths, you reminded me that the female at the Montgomery Zoo has been on suicide watch for the past 2 years. Her mate died (I have no idea what killed him) and they keep trying to find a new one. I'm thinking it's not going to work, but I don't know much about Macaws. She along with her mate, the Scarlets, Blue and Golds, and Militarys have been there since the zoo opened, so I know they're all older than 27 years.

@BantyChooks I have 21 mystery eggs and 12 barnyard mixes in one bator and I'm still waiting for my Isabel Orp eggs to ship.
so sad

@BantyChooks can you please update your list to be in alphabetical order? it bothers me

I have devised my own numbering system for my birds.  I am tired of numbered zip ties where the number wears off in no time and becomes unreadable. I also tired of finding the numbered wrap around bands all over the yard and no idea which belongs to which bird..

So I have a color coded number system I will be trying. I bought a bunch  of colored cable ties on Amazon.

I have given each tie a value:

Red-------       1
White-----       2
Green----        3
Yellow----        4
light blue----    5
purple-------     10
Black-------       20
grey--------       50
dark blue----   100

I think I can get any number I need with 4 bands or less.

Bird 49 =    Black+black+yellow+light blue
bird 16=     purple+green+green            or Purple,white and yellow...

How you get there makes no difference,  I will be able to tell the birds from a distance also..

I sure hope this works, as I get ready for testing again I dread having to buy more numbered bands just to have them turn worthless is a couple months.

I will still need numbered bands for the bird shows, but I can put them on and off as I need them.

I know it is not a big thing, but I get tired of spending money on bands when this might just work better for me.

On my quail a tie on left leg is male right leg is female.
