EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

:he she just sent a picture. She did put a heat lamp in the mother heating pad because I told her how important temperature was to keeping them healthy in the first few weeks but she did not provide direct shelter on the porch. She had to tarped it later when they got damp what are some people thinking????? My poor chickies :hit
Sometimes I wonder how I can sell my animals to people.

Damp bedding? I lost one last week when they spilled water and bedding got damp. It rained and temp dropped a bit, and they all were chilled.

Teflon bulbs? I almost bought some by mistake the other day. Doesn't seen like they would get overheated with the mhp.
she said yes, they got a little damp but they have a heat lamp and a mother heating pad. I know that's still not enough if they got a child. Any suggestions

Brooder temp? Could still be overheating with bulb and mhp if there is no cool spot.

Moldy feed or bedding? I'd scrub it out totally and start with fresh everything. I use puppy pads to help soak up spills.

Edit: I wouldn't rule out coccidia it it has been damp.

hey guys I need to pick your brains. I just had someone I sold 16 Chicks 2 last week message me and say all but four have died. I told her to use medicated feed and I don't know if she did and suggested corrid even though I don't know if that is the problem. She says she built a mama heating pad and put them in a box with wire cover and pine shavings it is an old gardening type box. Other than temperature and coccidia I don't know what to suggest all of my chicks that I still have are fine.

Dry conditions, big ventilation, good feed, clean water, a warm spot and lots of cool space. It is that simple.

One of those conditions are missing.

Yes, she let them get damp. What is the best way to warm/help those that survived?

I'm warned her about temperature that they were ready for 85° that week, and said she didn't have a thermos thermometer till you do I told her if the huddled under the light they are too cold, if there are all as far away from it as they can get they can be too hot and if there's some doing running around and some under it should be okay she did not listen. They were all huddled in the picture she sent. Then she added mhp, but let them get damp in the rain that blew under the porch. :he

WOOHOO!! Congrats!!

Been business as usual here. It's deathly hot at Kristin's place, I've got a broody, it's spring everywhere but Canada, more cute goat pics, and we're all gonna drown in gunfire.
I went to go turn my eggs, and realized a bunch of eggs are hatching so I had to leave them be. LOL

I'm doing staggered batches, so whatever hatches, hatches. ^.^

She needs to replace the wet bedding with dry, use a hair dryer to dry and warm the chicks.
She doesn't need a thermometer. Just make sure the heat lamp provides a hot spot with lots of room to escape it.
What kind of container or space is the brooder?

I walked her through it like you did me with my first chicks, but she didn't listen. They were obviously not warm enough.
Here it is before she added mhp the day she got them from me. She said she added it the next day. I will ask if she changed the bedding. I can't imagine not.

The ventilation looks good. I'm with you. I think they're chilled. She needs to get one of those heat lamps much lower.
