EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi everyone. With regards to surrogacy/adoption, will I be able to place ducklings with a mother and 4 older ducklings (a week old). I have had issues with my ducks sitting on eggs of various ages so they are at various stages of development. I want my last sitting female to hatch all her eggs but there are 4 that are much closer to hatch ( in a day or 3) than the others. I want to set those 4 ducklings in with the duck already raising babies. Will this be possible? I know my chickens tend to be bullies to younger newer chicks and so was wondering if this was the same for muscovies?

morning. I had to wake up and kill both a scorpion and a wolf spider that was in with my brooders on the floor... (okay, the wuss in me had my husband do it.)

wow....a scorpion and a wolf spider....

Ok, crazy night. My 15 chicks from Ideal came... a Dark Cornish hatched, the White Laced Red Cornish is still working on getting out, and 3 Easter Eggers have now pip'd...

From Ideal, I got 10 NN, and 5 "Assort" Sebright...looks like 3 Silver, 2 gold... they are TINY! I really don't think they should ship these
sad.png
they look in bad shape, much too small to hold hydration and nutrients for long...poor things... I'm camped at the brooder, constantly dipping beaks or setting them in the gro-gel or food, rescuing them from being trampled... wow...stressed...

So tiny compared to the NN or other chicks...

One got inside the long feeder I just put in there yesterday...least she's eating and safe from trampling

awwwww I hope they are doing well by now!!!

I have WATER!!!!!!

oh great news DAX!!!!!
My son and I were baking cupcakes earlier and we decided to try the "shake the egg till the aircell dislodges and you hear it pop".
I was amazed it took so much to dislodge the Aircell. We ended up doing it on 3 store bought eggs.
I am curious if anyone has tried comparing store bought egg to your own eggs. Assuming aircell size was similar I wonder if the home raised eggs would be able to withstand more jarring.
Not sure if healthier hens eggs that can withstand more jarring than store bought or not.
Just thinking out loud...
We have done this, only thing that makes it any easier is to shake a serama or bantam egg. I dont think its brute force that loosens them, I think its the constant vibrations of movement, temp changes although the age of the egg ph and the larger the air cell the worse it is yes.

I'l slightly frustrated! I bought some serama eggs from a breeder that I've been working with all summer (5+ dozen to be exact). they are less than 4 hours away. Package left Monday and now they are still showing a delay on shipping and I wont get them until Monday. I am concerned about viability of the eggs-not knowing what has gone on with them this entire week, I can probably almost guarantee detached air sack and will need to let them settle for another 24 hours. So this will put them a t 10+ days old. I contacted the seller-they are nice people-not scams. Any suggestions????

I would check on how long shipping takes and file a claim if its after, but sundays dont count. I hope you paid for insurance?
I would settle to room temp 6-12 hrs and set them, dont let them get any older

@Sally Sunshine This link has one of the best collection of candling eggs day by day I've found so far, including with pen marks to show where veins/baby is, and videos for heartbeat/movement.

the cute, tiny Sebright chicks from Ideal are not doing well...one died while I was sleeping, 3 more just want to sleep only... :'(
oh no, I am so sorry, poor babies, I am fairly sure ideal backs up there shipping and keep track and they will replace, call them about it. I am sorry. What stinks is you cant request heat packs or they dont put a cut orange in them, it can be a life saver.

What a busy day. My aunt and uncle's new place is so awesome. I think it's 12 acres.

I spent a great deal of time telling my aunt all about the chicken coop we could build and even offered to hatch her some chicks.

Their neighbors have goats, cows, geese, and show rabbits.

I may have drooled a little.
Sounds lovely. Wipe your chin, there is a little drool on it.

He is still refusing to wear them. I can get him to average about 15 minutes a day so far. LOL so.... we go back to the eye doctor in december. I warned her when she insisted he needed glasses that it was going to be a battle, and I'm currently losing. Anyone who tried to FORCE a toddler to keep something on their head that they don't want... well, they didn't have a normal toddler.

:p

Also - I get to start testing on Halloween... if you know what I mean? :p
