EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Morning, everyone! :frow

Oh, WOW! The photo is even more impressive than your story - so glad you could rescue them! And s/he's precious! (I might try turkeys one day if the number of chickens goes back down - up to my eyeballs ATM.) Tell your oldest boy to leave him the %^&$ alone this time!!!!! Puppies are cute, too, as is that sweet little girl (tell her I said hi!). :love

Ugh. One of the reasons I have it set up so my bedroom windows look out of the chicken yard and are close to the coops is so I know if there's anything going on. Last night I woke up and heard a bunch of flapping in the NN coop (the one that's 20 feet from my window), so I got up and pulled on clothes and a head lamp and rushed out, but nothing - I think someone lost their balance on the roost and was flapping to get back in place. But I did the rounds in the yard for good measure. Just because my coops are built very securely doesn't mean I'm foolish enough to think that something might not get to them (or at least freak them out trying). :he

Hey, Peter!!! We're getting rain here as well - I have tomatoes I really need to get in (at this point they'll be "fall crop" tomatoes). I really need to get back into a normal system for my garden - everything has gone sideways since the chickens.

Looks good! Two questions: Did you flip F on purpose (did updated plans call for that)? In mine, F has the laps facing forward. It's not a disaster if you can't undo it - I actually have one of them I did this in by accident, it's just that the door is a little off kilter bottom to top.

Second question: Do the new plans make H (middle piece in the back) short like that, or was that your modification? I'm just curious, as mine has H going up part ways - not that it accomplishes anything, except maybe to attach HW cloth to.

I managed to get a lot of the chicken stuff done yesterday (not that there's not more to do - there's ALWAYS more to do), and today is a kitchen day, as I need to part up all my culled chickens and get them in the freezer (and possibly can some if the freezer is full). If I time it all right, I may do another big batch of stock today with the backs and necks, and then can it (if not, it'll have to be tomorrow).

One thing I like about the new BYC is that, for whatever reason, I am finding that it leads me to look at other active or new threads/articles more often (I used to just stick to my subbed threads) - I was reading something about the Purina Flock Block. Just curious, has anyone tried these? With my wandering escapees as well as the predators/hawks, I've decided that when I leave town, I'll just leave them in their coops for that period, and while they have enough space, I thought this could be a boredom buster...

OK, back to the kitchen - gotta get that boning knife sharp and the FoodSaver sealer set up. :frow

I'm not 100% sure if that guy is a boy or a girl. LOL

With that said, sometimes I really hate the texas weather. it's so unpredictable, and the storms are rough on my young birds :( I wasn't expecting it to flood like that.

I'm actually scared to put my birds back outside now. haha

Didn't intentionally modify anything; just turned out that way, I guess.

The storms are really terrifying sometimes, that's for sure. I'm fortunate to have a sloped area, and I brood all little ones indoors for a longish while, so they are able to get to the "higher ground" of their roost platform in case of flash flooding. Two of the newer tractors have had to be built in the "flood plain" runoff part of the yard, so I'm keeping my eye on it, but at least it never sits, it always runs through. (All the coops are a little damp now, though - it's supposed to rain more today and tomorrow, so I'm waiting, and then I'm swapping out the bedding for a couple of them that are particularly bad. I do deep litter, but would need LOTS of dry stuff to balance that out.

Weather is different this year. I put 12 in freezer last week. May buy some bantam dark Cornish eggs on eBay this am.

I tried the flock block. They loved it. Too expensive to buy every other week, though, which is how long it took my brood to demolish it.

Good morning Banti. Did I read you were getting more ducks?
 I have 10 now. So no more.

I think I can find room for it.
I can make you one just like it; you just gotta come after it.
I think I can find a trailer to fit it... Be there as soon as it's ready.
