EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

He actually came directly from Ideal Poultry just the way he is with my batch of Naked Necks. Obviously some non-naked neck blood in there - @Kev was thinking Wyandotte was in there somewhere, I think.

It's a rose comb on steroids, I think it gets like that when it's so hot while it develops... I should get some photos of some of his daughters with weird variations...
Huh. That's cool and crazy all at the same time!

I've got eight S&G broiler-type Naked Neck boys (at 16 weeks old), and will need to cull a couple I'm sure about culling, but want to watch the rest to see how they do. That being said, there is a top contender - he's the top cockerel in the group, the only one who crows, and disciplines any of them that try to attack my boots. He's also huge - almost 10 pounds. He runs a bit like a sumo wrestler - it's hysterical. His name is Bubba - I'll try to get a photo. I usually let the names come to me over time, so they fit them, and another one of those boys acquired the name Ricky Bobby this weekend. :lau

So what does the term broiler mean? I've seen that on signs too where chick s were being sold.

It means birds that are meant for meat - so, fast easy growth. Often it's Cornish Crosses. These "Naked Neck broilers" are from a line that S&G Hatchery maintained that had that super early growth - they had a 100 chick minimum, but we all wanted to try them. They recently got out of NNs and sold their breeding stock to Dunlap, so I ordered 25 chicks this year. They're BIG, and good tempered. The girls are huge ad COMPLETE sweethearts. It caused a lot of stress because the decision meant I had a LOT of chicks this year, but I'm glad I did it.

I like monkey! He looks sweet ❤
He is - he's also an AMAZING leader for his little flock. He doesn't let the Three Witches (the three mean cream legbar girls) pick on the others too much, and the coop they are in has a paddock that's the most open/at risk for hawk incursions. He is SUPER vigilant and they stay close to him when foraging, and he ALWAYS has his head up. A really good guy!

I think it was the tongue-eating louse ! :lau
