EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I have an old shed that is falling apart. I defently need to do something more stable but it works for now.
You will be less worried about the predators one you get a secure coop, but I know all about the it works for now stuff. I am doing some of that on my new stalls and temporary kidding area.

I am just feeding too many. There is not enough to be made on eggs with Wal Mart selling whites for fifty three cents.
@Farmer Connie What price do you charge for your eggs?
Hey dax!
Funny you should ask. We just had a problem pushing eggs when we raised our prices after the barley shortage and the day light hours killed our piggy bank.
Was $2/DZ.
We raised it to $3. Grandfathered our regular buyers but the phone stopped ringing with newbies.
I have a lot of chickens.. eggs started overflowing even though my regs were buying 15 Dz a week.

Dropped the price back to $2 the other day and now the barn refrigerator is empty again.
People keep telling me here on BYC that I sell my eggs too cheap. But they don't live in Florida's economy.
Walmart has 18 packs for $1.19 right now.
Not everyone cares about freshness and all natural here as much as getting something dirt cheap.
That is why people of the North retire here. The cost of living is low.
There is another big chain store here selling eggs for 49 cents a DZ.

Same thing with our swine. We use to breed all year round. Now seasonal and mostly personal. ALMOST NO ONE WANTS TO PAY FOR QUALITY.
We have 2 Premium fed pigs ready for process. Top shelf grains/alfalfa/perennial peanut/veggies/acorn fed.
Big bucks went into raising these magnificent animals to get them large at a super young age to yield angel hair tenderness.
We are trying to sell one of them to pay for the processing of the other. Asking $1 per lb hoof weight. DH gets offers for $50 all the time. More than $300 in feed went into this livestock to feed a family for months and months.
We got a call while we were at the meat counter in the store yesterday. DH told the guy to come to that meat display and buy a couple of packages with the tiny amount he offered.
The Market is FLOODED with
  • Eggs
  • Chickens
  • Pigs

I have this huge metal stall barn thingy.. It would be nice if I could figure out how to use it properly.. The front is open so no security. Thats why they are in the shed but their run is really open and that will always be an issue with hawks.. Thought about netting but i would have to cut the run down.. Right now im just unsure where to go with this. So far the only chicken we have lost was to an opossum at night. I found the whole and his tracks so its fixed but during the day the birds are free game.

Wow. 2 bucks.. Its unfortunate that people dont understand what goes into raising livestock. In our area we are all at an understanding that we all sell our eggs for 4 bucks but there are no grocery stores close by...

I have been selling for a dollar fifty as long as they return my cartons, but I'm going to have to go up to 2 I'm just giving them away and I can't afford it.

I would love to have one of your two pigs if you were closer. I know the feeling though, I had trouble moving my steer this year and that was at 2:40 a pound hanging weight. I have no idea what it cost to raise these animals since I'm not a big Corporation and can't buy bulk feed and I want the stuff that doesn't have all the chemicals in it. I am with your husband though when you look at a pack of steaks and it's 10 $15 for not even the best stuff for a couple of steaks but they don't want to pay for the whole steer. Of course our local meat processors are getting proud of their stuff too. It cost $498 to process one steer this fall.

We have added 3 hours to the morning with lights on a timer, at least until Spring. I am collecting an average of 70 eggs a day right now. Spring should bring it up to 100+ when my new additions start up. I don't have storage space for them when the phone stops ringing.
Solution.. $2 per dz.. At least my feed bill is covered and we get the cream of the crop..
