I've thought of it, actually, but never got around to it. I'm sure if I inquired with the high and mighty there'd be flap about it, but nobody cares if nobody asks. It's seasonal---it dries up in late summer, and is big enough for ducks to swim in in spring. Maybe 5' wide, 1' deep?

I tell you what should work like a champ, but it would be readily visible from a distance, depending on the terrain, and have to be replaced periodically...hay or straw bales.

As far as $5 solutions go, it's not a bad one.

Here's a picture I just took of the yard. I have three pens plus the quail to move somewhere shady.

This is the seasonal stream---you can see it's shutting down for the summer. Still, with a bit of digging, maybe I can make it stick around longer in the future.

How far apart are the two coops? Too far for a large tarp?

Nice milking stand; neat head gate.

Shouldn't be a big trick at all to modify the water flow a bit. All you'd be doing, really, is creating a shallow basin in a creek bed; creeks have them in abundance by design.

Well, I might actually have a big enough tarp. I got the biggest one I could find back when I needed to cover the coop roof. Mounting it might be 'interesting', though, since they are pretty far apart.

Maybe two tarps of the same size, tied together at the grommets? If there are dead & straight pines on the "back 40" you could fashion a couple props with a ridge pole between them, like a big tent or pavilion.

I'm in the banana belt of the VWN, so yep, there's grass now and then. That might work. I have plenty of brush piles to choose from too.
