EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@ChickenCanoe
I hope you are well. I have been thinking of you all week as I deal with coons the last three mornings I've caught big full-grown Coons the first day at the end of last week I caught a little baby one where they were digging into the barn. Then when I moved it over by the chicken coop and set it up I've been catching 1 every day now. Three days in a row, bad deal. made worse by the fact that I lost my llama this week so I don't have a protector at the moment for my goats much less my chickens.
Good morning Dax. Sorry to hear about your llama. Your raccoon count sounds like mine a few years back. That and skunks.

It makes sense to the seller, in which by the way IS getting a higher pay! :lol:
A general liking mineral block, or a block of a Himalayan salt is not enough? (I really don't know nothing in Goats keeping )
no, they actually can't get enough mineral from a licking block and a lot of our areas are severely deficient in particular things like we have a real issue with selenium and copper around here. we have so much lime and mineral from the ground that it leaches copper out of their systems,a some of the other minerals and other things are nit in the soil. so supplementation is very important especially if you want to keep some of the parasites at bay. we have to be careful to keep our mineral levels up along with very careful with our wormers becauset have been overused and are becoming entirely ineffective and thus our losses grow especially to the barber pole worm. I am bringing in some Sericea Lespedeza, because it is proven to be a natural anti wormer.

oh I have the skunk's too in fact I've opened the door to have 1/2 ft in front of my front door on the porch several mornings in the last couple of weeks the cones and skunks are out of control right now.
I knew I had to do something when I was starting to lose my first birds to predators during early morning or evening and it was Coons. they were actually coming out early enough to get two birds either before they went to roost or just after it was light enough for the door to open. I used to be so persnickety in wouldn't open my coops and let them out very often, but with the cost of feed and everything else and I have too many birds anyway I've just started opening then letting them free range a whole lot more which means there's a chance of losses. of course one of them was just a stupid bird that didn't want to come in and I got tired of chasing.

The numbers have dropped here significantly. I think the new neighbors must be paying rodent control. Trap has been empty for several months.
I’ve been letting my chickens out for the same reason. That and they make great weed eaters. I still let them in and out manually and yes I have a couple of the dumb ones as well. Walk right past the door up the hill and try and to get into coop from there. Always back in the morning but they can fly very well so I’m sure they are in trees somewhere.

Gosh darn it, I lost my favorite chick. It had amazing coloring, and I was thrilled to see how it would turn out. This is the first hatchling I've lost. Why did it have to be this one? :hit

On another note, I'm having a REALLY hard time convincing myself to wait to hatch again until spring. This is so addictive! I even looked on Ebay again, lol. :oops: Logic shall prevail, because I want to either get more local eggs, or order from the place I got my first eggs from (all the eggs that didn't hatch were my fault). And I don't want to fuss with babies in frigid temps. So I'll wait. I mean it, I'll wait!
good luck, though personally I prefer fall chicks because then by the time they're ready to lay eggs it's time to lay eggs instead of being just ready to start laying eggs when everybody stopping for winter with its short days. of course you have a more dedicated winter than we do we get the colds but we get warm ups that have North you guys don't get like we do. part of the reason I moved.

How cool! I cant wait till Luke is older, he is playing clarinet in elementary but wants to switch to base clarinet but WOW no way can I swing price. Braces yes instrument hmmmm ughhhh I priced used, I cant imagine new!

I was flag leader in high school, back when we had big flags to twirl, loved whipping that sucker around, marching in them boots sucked but other than that was fun to practice and come up with routines. go figure no pictures in history of that time though :)
maybe you can find someone who still has an instrument laying around they just never got rid of but rarely used anymore I know I have a violin that I only pull out every once in a great while anymore.
I always thought flag/drill team was cool wish you had a picture.I was always too busy doing a sport though to do that

sorry about the baby, addictive really? I had no clue! Ask on your local site here for hatching eggs @Uff Da try to avoid shipped
for that matter if you know somebody locally that's just selling eggs they may very well be fertile if you want to just practice. of course they won't be as good as eggs like chickencanoes because I know he feeds extra stuff to get ready for hatching eggs.
