EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I am so frustrated right now. I've lost 4 of my month-old chicks in the last 3 days. One to my dog, one to a mean older hen, and two drowned in the water bucket. I just want to smack myself over the bucket. How could I have missed that risk?! What an awful death--I feel so irresponsible for not thinking to cover it. I am so ashamed of myself for not doing better. :hit:he And now I've gone from 4 roos and 5 pullets to 3 roos and 2 pullets.
I introduce new chicks only at age of 3 months. And you need a special water vessels.

I lost a nice pullet due to a small hole on coop. I knew to plug it, even thought at the time I should go get wood and take care of it. Came home from work and she had stuck her head out but couldn’t get back in. :barnie
Sometimes it just happens. It’s plugged now.
I have lost a wonderful hen to a potato plant that grow from a fragment of a potato.

I don't have anywhere else to put them. They've been in a little coop/run inside the larger run (so they've been exposed to the bigger chickens for weeks), but it is getting cramped and they are so happy when out in the larger run. I thought there would be enough room for everyone to keep out of each other's way--it's well over 400 sq. ft. with lots of cover. The waterer just needs a lid--it's a 5 gallon bucket with nipple spouts at the bottom. I've been telling myself for weeks to cover it up, and just didn't get around to it. 100% my fault. :(

What?! Are potato vines poisonous enough to kill a chicken? What about tomato plants? My compost pile is in the chicken run--I guess I won't be composting any potatoes.

Green potatoes are bad for us and them. They just succumb faster because they are a lot smaller.
We all have drowning victims. Young children and young animals find our mistakes.

Here, @Uff Da, I made you lemon bars. You can binge on them while I get finger foods ready for the football games. You can bring the alcohol.

I have two first-time broodies hatching right now. Mutt eggs, I’m not invested. The hens are 7mos and I was surprised they went broody. They have accidentally smothered half of their hatched chicks. I feel bad that the chicks died, but these things happen. If they go broody again, I believe they’ll be much better. I’m at 10 living chicks, with about 7 eggs still left.

Potatoes leaves are extremely poisons, and if a bird is stupid enough to eat from them her genes will be Instantly subtracted from the gene pool.
