EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

There are three more stories at the bottom of the page after that one of other dog attacks.

When I was a teen about 50 years ago I was driving through a residential neighborhood near my house about 3am and came across a large pack of feral dogs of all sizes. There were at least 20 of them. I came to a stop sign and several of the larger dogs attacked my car, lunging at my window. I'm sure those dogs were in hiding places during the day.
Around the same period of time, a pack of dogs got into an antelope pen one night at the St. Louis Zoo and killed the whole herd.

That reminds me a story too, when I was a teenager , more then 40 years ago, I loved to go fishing. The way to the sea passed trough some sandy hills which in that time was near a very big dump. Suddenly a pack of dogs came down barking and running to me, I can remember a very large lactating bitch with 4-5 big pupps and some males all of them running full speed directly to me! I felt an incredible adrenaline rush and in a second I took my fishing road started waiving it above my hed and started running while screening my lungs out directly into the pack, I think that I never saw a pack of dog running away that fast! :lau

That's the way to do it.
That's the approach I was always prepared to do if encountering a bear in the woods. But I haven't seen a bear while hiking since I was a kid.
However, while camping on gravel bars on canoe excursions, I've had mountain lions come close at night on 3 occasions. I always try to have a fire going most of the night. I go out and grab a smoldering piece of wood and rush the brush beating it with the wood while screaming. It has always sent them away. The last time I was floating the Gasconade in flood stage with my teenage son and he freaked out when I did it saying he would have run the other way.

The interactive map of confirmed mountain lion sightings in MO in the followinglink shows a big cluster of sightings in the south of the state and that is the area I usually float and camp on various rivers.

Dog Shooting Court Case

This is from the early 90s, but it's a good example of the kind of trouble you can get for shooting a dog here. What's ironic is how rabid Montanans are against wolves...but dogs kill more livestock, and are more likely to kill livestock, than wolves here. And we've never had a case of wolves attacking people in the state either, but dog attacks are common. Just goes to show how much the power of suggestion can affect public perception and policy.

P.S.
I've always loved fishing too.
