EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Sunday was day 7 and for once I didn't candle. I candled just a bit ago. 3 of the bought eggs were tossed because they quit. Both of the eggs I found in the yard were tossed because one blood ringed and the other was infertile. Not bad, all things considered.

Well. Do I have a story to tell!

I got up this morning at 5am, thanks to my toddler, and noticed that the lid to my incubator was halfway off. I rushed over and felt the eggs, which I had just locked down the night before, and they were cold. As cold as if they had never been in the incubator. I was just sick, because three of the eggs were from my dad's chickens that were killed by a fox.

I put it back on, with no real hope. Several hours later, one of my kids let me know that the lid was off AGAIN. Again, the eggs were cold. All the way. I figured out that the turning mechanism was catching on something and flipping the lid off. I candled a couple of the eggs, and saw no movement. I was going to throw them out at that moment, but I was in a hurry because we were supposed to be meeting my dad, so I stuck them back in the bator, which was still plugged in and running.

I just pulled them out to throw away, and decided to look just one more time before I threw them in the trash.

And I saw movement! I checked them all, and they are ALL moving!

I told my kids we shouldn't get our hopes up, because the temperature drop could have done enough damage that they may not hatch after all.

But...:fl

Duckling checked the eggs last night. I positioned the light, but she looked. I was not really looking, but the shapes looked like development to me! One I didn’t notice anything, but she pointed out the big, dark dot. On the last I saw veining from the top. This incubator is not ideal (or any other hatchery. ), but it seems to be working pretty well.

Five year anniversary was a few days ago. Here's to five years of chickens and many more!

Meanwhile, garden is doing fine. Leeks are in the seed trays in the greenhouse and once they get pencil size they'll be trimmed and moved outside to finish out. The raspberries have green berries w=already and should be ready in a few more weeks, which of course means jam!

Chicken coop planning is now fully underway and we're setting aside material for the build. We have the entire back portion of our property set aside to be fenced off, making a frankly huge area of land for the chickens to run around on. Something like 8x16 meters/ a bit under 9x17 yards of land. We only plan on maybe 6 hens (I am patently ignoring my father in law who for whatever reason insists we need a rooster when it's obviously not true) which will be more than enough. The only predators we have to protect from are the dogs, specifically the in-laws' dogs since ours have been trained to leave the birds alone and drop them if they forget to ignore the birds.

It's been a very busy and dirty quarantine for us. Gonna be glad when the in-laws are working again and leave us alone.
