We are about 7 inches shy of our normal. It won’t make that up. Fortunately the snow pack is still there.

Why was the turning mechanism still turning? They don't really need turning after day 15. Turn it off.

There is no way to turn it off. It has two trays, and you are supposed to take the top one out so that the turning mechanism can't reach down to engage. There is also a basket-thingy that the eggs sit in, which is rolled back and forth by the turning mechanism. I had read that people would leave that in as a way to separate their eggs for easier chick id. But my turner caught on the basket thing, and I had to take it out.

I did have to toss one egg tonight. It was just a jiggly blob with no veins left. Now I only have 2 eggs left of my dad's, and I started with 6.

I did get 18 shipped eggs put in my Binsea. I need to start turning them in the morning.

That sounds too complicated.

There is no way to turn it off.

I'd cut the wires to the turner and insert a switch so you can turn the turner portion off after day 15 while still running the heat and fan.

The thermostat on these older Hovabators is really touchy, but this one seems to do o.k. set at an even 100*, so I don't mess with it.

I had an attack of the dumba$$ at the beginning; forgot to plug the turner in for the first 3 days.

Never shut the turner off 15 days in before. Would you turn it off in this case, or let it go 'til hatching commences?

Lost track on the turner once. It ran till they started hatching.

All mutts. The lone rooster is pure Buff Orpington; 2 hens are pure BCM, 1 is BCM / RSL.

In spite of what I know, I still screw up a lot. I'm the ultimate dumba++.
After the eggs have incubated for about 2 weeks or so, turning doesn't help much because the frequent turning the first two weeks is most important for development of the amnion and chorion membranes in the egg which help feed the embryo nutrition and aid gas exchanges.
Lots of people don't turn eggs the first few days for shipped eggs but I think that is a mistake. If the air cell is broken loose, not turning won't put it back in place. I think frequent turning is still more important than the air cell. If the air cell isn't intact, make sure the eggs are upright, large end up at lockdown.
I would still turn the turner off by day 19 no matter what (or much earlier).

I don't want to tell you how many times I've had chicks emerge in an energized turner. I've never killed one but it still isn't ideal.

Yeah that chick was early but even still I was behind on that hatch.
