EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I caught all my cockerels yesterday & put them in the small run, plus a pullet I thought was a rooster 'til this morning when one of the cockerels ran her down & tried to mount her. Moved all the pullets (except the one I missed) into the large run. That'll leave the rooster with 10 hens all to himself; he should be a happy camper about now. He'll probably drop over dead with a heart attack, but he'll die with a smile on his face!

Good for him!

So I tried shipping a little bit different. A customer wanted me to put them in Dixie cups. I think this will work pretty well. Below is how I did it.

1) cut out a small piece of bubble wrap that will fit in the bottom of the Dixie cup.

2) wrap the egg up in bubble wrap (same way as Sally does it)

3) Place the egg in the Dixie cup with the fat end up. Then cut out a rectangle from the bubble wrap, fold it in half, and tape it on top of the Dixie cup.

4) Wrap a strip of bubble wrap around the Dixie cup, secure it. Place it in a mailing envelope that has been cut and folded over (if that makes sense).

5) Fold excess under the mailing envelope with eggs in it. Add bubble wrap on top and wherever you thing it is needed. Then close box.

6) I packed the box with an egg carton under the smaller box and eggs cartons and bubble wrap on the sides. Unless wrap on the sides. Put any information you want the buyer to know in the box and close the top.

I thought this was interesting and might be a good way to ship! Let me know what you to guys think! @Sally Sunshine
Nice! but as many eggs as I always ship out I dont think I could fit what I need to in an inner box. I had to use a bigger inner box just to send you what you got, I typically use the smaller inner box so I can cattycorner it for safe travels. But I like that it would keep them upright better you betcha.

If you know both coops are secure, then it might not matter.
Well, if you guys think changing hens and roosters around again in the spring is not a big deal I will put them in the big coop. It would all be sliced easier if I could put them in the green and big coops, but I don't have a way to put my automatic door opener on the green coop since the door opens sideways (design flaw). Oh well, hopefully nobody kills anybody. None of the three cockerels are overly dominant yet so hopefully they can integrate now and then in the spring.

Happy math and science day! :D
Awwwww. It's math and science day? Awesome!
It is at school, if nowhere else. They can wear sports team shirts instead of uniforms, and there's a pumpkin decorating contest. Parents are invited up this afternoon, not sure what else is planned.

Hi Dan!!

you sure should finish that bator!! Sooner or later yer gonna have a bratty broody and wish it was ready to put ER eggs in it!! How are all the critters doing? What have you processed and will have overwinter?

How did the pig raising go? any tips? I have so much trashed Hay from the goats, it would be nice to have one just to eat their scraps!!

@dan26552 and you know you dont have much farther to go on that cooler!!

I think you need to keep the most desired safest for wintering.
Well the two cost me 110 each to get them so I am peranoid about integrating them too, but they are coming out of quarantine so moving everyone around at once so there is a shake up as I integrate sounds best to me. I am just worried about the spring changes.

Big bull & little bull on a hill overlook a herd of heifers down below.
Little bull says "Why don't we run down there and breed one of those heifers?"
Big bull says "Why don't we walk down there and breed 'em all?"
