Have they noticed a big body of water to their west? Desalination plants would do wonders. Don't they also use greywater for things too?

Only if they're set up for it. Most homes were built when there was a good supply of water.

Two things that come to mind. Apples dyed red and salmon dyed pink. It is to make them more appealing to consumers. Stupid consumers, I might add.
