EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I feel that way about EEs. So much variety!

Love them too... Such pretty colours. I'm also a fan of OEGB and Brahma (none right now)

I still miss having speckled sussex. :hit If I can get my hands on good ones I'd do that again. Also wanted to try the neiderrheiners again. I hatched some but DH left them locked in the tractor on a hot day (I was in Houston picking up folks from the airport). Massive casualties to the expensive eggs I'd driven across the state for. Didn't lose any of the mutts I hatched with them. :/

Question:

How do you remain satisfied with your choice of chicken breeds? I read about why others like the breed they have picked and begin to want is in their coop.
I haven't decided what type of chickens I want. It's why I have a few different breeds, and keep so many. O.o

I'm going to be happy with my silkie pen. I have cochins, but I may eventually try to go to mostly EE's at some point. I love their personalities and my roosters stayed nice through puberty. They just started crowing and aren't aggressive, I just love them.

My polish are flighty - probably won't replace them with more polish. I'm loving my cochins, but they are too broody, probably won't be getting them again, simply because of that factor. I need them for eggs.......... sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lol

I think one needs to have experienced an extreme number of breeds so they discover what matches their personality. However they do need to have worked with several of different classes. i.e. Mediterranean, English, American, Continental, Asian, etc..
I don't have a coop. I have several housing choices for from trios to 15 birds. Works for me and breeding.

I recommend getting as many different breeds as you can handle. Then you can judge their personalities and how they match yours.

I'm loving my silkies, welbars, Ayam cemani right now. They're all so sweet and friendly though the Ayam cemani are only a week old yet lol
Sweet and friendly isn't what I look for in chickens. IMHO, they should be self sufficient livestock that fend for themselves and don't need mothering.

I'm in the middle. The primary function of our flock is education, so I need birds that tolerate being handled. But I also like them to have enough sense to fend for themselves. Having lots of roosters helps this, I think, because 3-4 hens will branch off and a roo will follow them. I don't keep aggressive or overly flighty birds.

I like the EEs and the giant cochin I've had. I think I'll love the banty cochins and the silkie/EE mixes I was gifted. I don't care much for the honas because they're small and don't care to be handled, but otherwise they are excellent. Very alert and predator savvy, extremely thrifty on feed. I'm also not impressed with my HRIR. They're decent broodies but otherwise boring.

I'm looking forward to seeing how my Sally birds fit into the program. I have a sapphire roo, OE roo, barred pullet, and two legbar pullets. I've heard they're flighty, but if the EEs and other pet birds are friendly enough it will be fine.
