EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope everyone enjoyed their day of thanks, and filled their bellies to the brim!!!

I haven't been around, in case anyone noticed, so I thought I'd drop in to say howdy. HOWDY!

I've been staying busy with my RIR's, and it seems like there's something new to do every day. Not long ago I picked up a trio of top-notch reds, so I was already thankful for that. Just today, two of my pullets decided to start laying. Yet another thing to be thankful of! I figured I'd have to induce laying with artificial lighting around the end of January so they'd be ready to start the breeding process in early February. Looks like they don't care about the days getting shorter after all... lol! As of right now, I'm only focusing on breeding the new trio, but I've brought one of the original pullets over to the trio pen because she has a better tail angle. She has a little excess black, but I'm going to use her anyway. Who knows... I might get lucky and they'll throw some beautiful chicks. Time will tell.

It's been awhile, so here's a video of my birds as they are now. The video starts in the pen with my original birds, and ends in the pen with the new trio (now a quad)...

Beautiful birds Joey, yes you have been missed and tagged a plenty!!

I was looking up coccidia information and was pleasantly surprised to find correct dosage on this site:
http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/Coccidiosis.html
The most common drug used in treating poultry in the back yard setting is Amprolium, also known as Corid. It can be mixed in the water and is used for 3-5 days for effective treatment. It works by mimicking an important amino acid called thiamine that the coccidia need to survive. The coccidia attempts to use the amprolium instead of thiamine and dies. Amprolium is very safe, up to 8 times the recommended dose has been given without significant affects.

The dosing is as follows, mixed in water:
*The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid 20% Soluble Powder is 1/3 teaspoon/gallon.
*The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid Liquid (9.6% Solution) is 1/2 teaspoon/gallon.

*The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid 20% Soluble Powder is 3/4 teaspoon/gallon.
*The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid Liquid (9.6% Solution) is 1 teaspoon/gallon.

*The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid 20% Soluble Powder is 1.5 teaspoons/gallon.
*The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid Liquid (9.6% Solution) is 2 teaspoon/gallon.
