EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I've put the dead chicken on the dog and it worked. .
how long did you leave it?? my husband was none too pleased when i did this, and only let me leave it there for a couple hours at most

mine would just eat it off of herself if I did that to her. Her prey drive is naturally high and she's fed raw. My other two dogs could care less about the chickens but are more than happy to steal their feed

lol
my dog steals horse and chicken food, but her favorite is chicken poop and live chickens

oh yes, can't forget the chicken poop! In the summer, my bulldog mix is an honorary member on the flock. She wanders amoung them, cleaning up all the tidbits they leave for her!

I'm not seeing many eggs either, but they are not getting electric and lights in a coop.

Mine don't have lights either.
The job should have been done early summer but I'm still dilly dallying getting electric run to all buildings.
For my heated circulated water systems, lights, etc..

@ChickenCanoe I left him one of those plastic one quart screw in waterers on the heat pad today. I am hoping that he will not knock it over or with his comb or get his wattles wet today until this weekend when I can make sure he is using the horizontal nipple waterer.
Sounds good. Good luck.

@ChickenCanoe there are two legbar pullets and two of the project OEs. I love that big cockerel.
When I saw the small picture I recognized Jaer colors on the cock and hen but then when I blew it up I saw the crests.

lol, i have tied dead chickens to my dog, and she mopes around, but it does nothing, next time she kills one i will beat her with it
gig.gif
maybe it will sink in
my husband thinks i am cruel for the shock collar and for the dead chicken being tied to her
he thinks she should be able to kill what ever she can catch, i want to put the collar on him
You know none of those abusive techniques work, right?

Some dogs have too high of a prey drive to ever train not to kill chickens no matter what you do.

A good shock collar is very useful. I've trained several dogs not to chase chickens, cats, horses..... The collar I use has several power settings so that you can use the one that is suitable for the dog. Enough to get their attention and not too much. It also has a setting that just vibrates and doesn't deliver any shock at all. I find this to be the setting that I use the most. If they ignore it, I start turning it up. I'm using it every night right now on my LGD. I can communicate with her from my bed that way. For example, if she decides to continuously bark at coyotes that are two miles away, I vibrate the collar. She is learning that there is a difference between predators that are across the valley and predators that are getting too close.

@DwayneNLiz I would put the shock collar on the husband and the dog! :gig

I have had a dead chicken from the dog's neck before but I left it until it rotted off on its own. The dog was not happy and stunk horribly but it never did kill another chicken

Sorry for the late comments, but I was in the blind all day. The laptop out there allows me to keep up, but not reply...BYC has the idea that I have it blocked. I'd get it straightened out, but this 'puter's going out there after Christmas, so it'll no longer be an issue.

Bubbles and anyone else with dogs who are wise to "hot collars":
Try using a "dummy" collar. Leave it on the dog whenever it's not wearing the active collar. Dummy collar are the same weight & shape, and look just like the active one. It's the rare dog that can tell the difference, so he/she behaves, thinking the shock or vibration will get him if he doesn't. I used the cheapy knockoff collar in the beginning; it was what I could afford. As soon as I was able, I upgraded to a Tri-Tronics; the best on the market then & probably still...best dog-training money I ever spent.

Sally You asked whether I'd tried the apple cider yet. I totally missed the reference...sorry

Yes u do know, my dog was fine until it saw my sisters dog get a chicken, then she decided chasing them was fine, she comes from working lines, it is outlet fault we just are not home enough to work with her. And he encourage her bad behavior
