EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

It's called line breeding, It is done to cement certain traits into a line. It's still incest, but I do it all the time with show birds.

The thing to remember is along with the good , you can cement in the bad things too.
Yes, I know you *can* do it, but I think it's why so many pure-bred dogs have so many genetic flaws that flare up randomly now, from inbreeding.

I just wasn't sure, what the likelyhood was, of causing severe issues in chickens.

Don't incubate eggs from birds that are in with their siblings... But I think it only becomes a problem after several generations.
Ahhh.... Yeah, none of my birds are related, EXCEPT Star, and white fluff and biter.

Well, and I suppose once I hatch the eggs in the incubator, there may be some other birds that are related, but none of my roosters or hens are related.

Ok, I misunderstood, Sorry, I would say slim chances of having something bad pop up.

I meant for the whole year.
Sigh... I suppose. But even I managed to set over 100 eggs last year so 100 is the bare minimum.

@Sally Sunshine

Twins are doing awesome. They have gotten to the point they notice each other and somewhat interact with one another. Last night they played a game of still each others bop (pacifier) for around 15 minutes before they both decided it wasn't funny anymore. Pretty much sleeping through the night (7-8 hrs). Speaking of teeth, they both have the bottom two trying to come in, we will see how teething goes.

Hope and prayers that your life calms down prior to you going in for surgery.

Duckling wasn't into pacifiers, and I only found one teether she occasionally liked.
Perhaps you have had them before (they've been around a while), but JIC, are you aware of the bibs with teethers built in?

Okay. lol that's all I was curious, chickens don't live very long, all things considered, so I haven't really seen people post much or talk much about the genetics of having a closed flock, and when/where/how they get fresh stock in, or if it's never their eggs, etc etc.

I mean, I know some things, like the Ayam Cemani's, are a special case, and there are some careful breeding programs that have been discussed on here - but my cochins are just pet quality, back yard flock variety. lol neither the mom, nor the dad were related, lol
