EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I read somewhere about running a tube inn and just filling with a syringe. Maybe Joey?

I thought about that, but this looks like the simplest fastest fix. I already have a tube in for the autofill thingy. but sometimes it does not work or plugs at the wrong moment.

I used a syringe on the foamies, but now that I am a big shot GQF person, I need to step up from the old syringe....

Banti - I found one reference. If your chicks are fully formed but are DIS before pipping, it lists these possibilities:

- Disease or flock in poor condition
- Eggs chilled or overheated before collection (I think they meant before incubation)
- Low average humidity over the incubation cycle
- Temperature of incubator too high or low
- Incorrect or inadequate turning
i agree with the cold before incubating, they were shipped
hmmmmm
So THAT'S where they got to!!
Sorry mam, won't happen too much, mam.....
mam is a shortened version of madame, please spell it properly

SERIOUS QUESTION HEREE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay... my toddler SWEARS he put a bead up his nose, and keeps telling me theres a bead in the same nostril. I for the life of me, do not SEE a bead... although he did have a gigantic booger, that we were able to remove for him.... he still keeps saying there's a bead in his nose.

I am trying to figure out if a doctor visit is warranted, to make sure there really IS no bead up his nose.

How long would you wait, to take him to the doctor?
did you get this resolved? did he have a bead in his nose?

5 of 8 have decent looking AC. I'm just trying to get her as close to 100% as possible. I'm also learning that I'm not a "hands-off" seller.

i am sure they appreciate your help

I hope you have had a good day guys. I have been very busy picking up Fire and Ice and a little companion for him.
@BantyChooks @Fire Ant Farm I have not had time to catch up, but I hope your hatches are going well.

Here are the boys
awwwww, theyre so cute!

So the other day when I wanted to leave, I had to fight my turkeys for my car.... I won... but it involved driving out of my drive way, then getting out of my car and placing them back in the yard before I left. They apparently, liked the ride.

My sex linked laid this spotted egg ;o

This is my big, chubby cat.

My husband has dubbed these cochin's the "gigantic fluff balls."
your turkeys are evil, maybe i dont want turkeys. This is the reason we dont want goats

Good morning. Gonna kind of take it easy today. Been out and got all the feeding done this morning. Think I'll watch the UConn women and then grill out for the football game. Chores only today but I may load up a cabinet. I don't think I told anybody but last fall I put a Barred Rock Roo over Ameracauna hens. They are now 11 weeks old and some cool looking birds. I'll try to get a pic up today.
wheres our picture?

I can't tell by that picture, but it appears to have gills so that ups the risk.
They are growing a short stalk, so I really can't tell, but unless they are false gills and those are chanterelles I would pass on them.
I do spore prints on new species I add to my diet/pantry. I am not liking the looks of those, but mushrooms can be local and look different from area to area. Did you know there are still thousands of mushrooms/fungi that have not even been classified yet?

There is under 150 species of trees in the USA and over 4,000 mushroom species, many are closely related, but no one knows them all. So if you decide to join me in picking them use care and study before you munch on them..

BUT they taste way better than store bought ones.

We have a mushroom thread but it is kind of dead this time of year, ask on there someone will know:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/newestpost/1130577
my grandfather used to harvest mushrooms, and my dad went with him a few times,
ihave been advised but have never tried, that so long as it is growing off of a tree whether alive or dead, that it is safe

Okay, y'all ....hang onto your seats.

With all the sickness & injuries running loose around here, I got jealous. I',m one of ya now

Saw a cardiologist last week 'cause, I'd been having some minor twinges in the chest. No pain; more a reminder that something was looking for attention.
He set me up for a cardio catheritization. That never happened; the valve is 99% blocked. I was transported to another hospital; a one in DC.
Open heart surgery scheduled 1st thing Monday

From what I hear, I'm in for a long, hard road ahead in the near future. Stick with me, friends; this might be pretty hairy?
hugs.gif
please keep us informed, you will make us worry
big gentle hugs

Well, not expecting yet! Did get the roo and hens into the integration pen though. He's gettin' picked on by Ethel! XD

Anyway, gotta shower and go grocery shopping.
Good luck! and the new birds are pretty!

I have a very good question that needs an answer.I have a bunch of my blue ee eggs in the bator and the last time too I found they developed faster and hatch first why Is that
the porosity of the egg

Can chickens have raw shrimp heads
sure, theyll probably love them

Quick question for all of you incubation experts. I'm on my first hatch with a homemade incubator, using the 22 amp GQP Wafer Thermostat for Incubator. I am using an Accurite thermometer/hygrometer (just a cheapo from Walmart, I think). My humidity is great, using just a small Tupperware of water. My eggs are on day 9, and all moving and looking good with good air cells. Now, my thermometer, which shows 24 hour highs and lows, as well as current, is really challenging my control freak tendencies.
he.gif
The high is 102, low is 97. I watched it cycle up and then back down and up again, it spends most of its time on 99/100. Now, my husband, an HVAC professional, says this is totally normal and that you will not get a perfectly steady temp in a forced air environment, but that the AVERAGE is what matters. In "non-HVAC speak", I think what he is telling me is my thermometer is TOO good and catching all the subtle fluctuations, and that's what is messing me up. He watches thermometers all day. But he doesn't hatch chicks. He said we can get a digital thermostat that will keep it at a .5 degree differential (cycling on and off continuously, I'm guessing), but it's gonna be hell expensive.
So how am I doing, oh wise ones? The chicks seem happy. Should I stop worrying about it? Should I buy some cheapo thermometers that don't show highs and lows and put them in there for peace of mind for my simplified brain so I don't go crazy? Or should I go buy air cell and active babies? Or is there some way to dial in the wafer thermostat more for a lower differential? I know some on here use the Wafer - help me, please!

lol, i think that you are thinking too much

Good night Kristen. Your right, I just want to stay there and cuddle.
On a sad note my doe that had goat Pollio in December miscarried this evening.

lots of thoughts of you, HarmonyAnn and pup

Poor Banty, duck haters, gonna hate, hate hate....

Shake it off, shake it off..............
OMG!!! lol this was my daughters favorite song for like 6 months!
My dear sweet husband went to our Amish neighbor's house today to pick up dog food and much to my surprise, pleasure and excitement, walked in the back door and handed me an egg carton filled with...HATCHING EGGS!

SQUEEEEEEEELLLLLLLL!!

Totally unexpected. I was jumping up and down. It's a wonder I didn't break them as I was trying to check them over and turn them pointy end down. Poor babies to be were quite chilled. First thing I did was check air cells and the ones I could visualize looked good so I have the dozen sitting on the counter top to bring the temp up. Second thing I did was plug in the Brinsea and start it heating.

Can I put these in the incubator tonight as long as the temp is stable? Should I wait till morning and just leave the eggs sitting till then to bring the temp up to room temperature, tilted as recommended?

These are little mutt bantam eggs like the ones I broody hatched last fall. They are lovely little birds though and I wanted more.

Ok, I know I didn't wait till March so don't hold it against me, LOL!
Awesome!! Congrats!!!

This will be me when and if I see a pip

0QpWM.gif
yer gonna turn into a girl?

Here it is, no laughing!

I'm sitting at 99 at the middle and bottom, and 98 at the top near the fan. There doesn't seem to be any temperature fluctuations over time, but there is definitely stratification. When I rebuild this, I'm going to have the lights on the side and a line of fans on the back, I think. Not sure how to ensure the temp is even throughout.
wow thats neat!

Have I ever told you how I found out one of my hens had flystrike?

Hint: Never hold your face that close to a chicken's butt if you think something is wrong with it. It will surprise you.
ewwwwwww

New baby today.

ITS SO CUTE!!!!!
love.gif
love.gif

Well guys, the game is on! I got the Brinsea fired up and holding a steady temp and humidity at 99.5 degrees and 36%. I could resist no further and was able to get 11 eggs into my incubator. One egg was a little on the big side for being a bantam so it got added to todays eggs in the fridge. Man, I tried every thing short of taping that puppy to the lid and just couldn't get it in and get the lid back on the incubator so 11 eggs it is and Feb 28th is the day. Funny. My first broody hen hatch was on Feb.29th last year.

I want to put up a sign that says "SHHHHHHH! Babies Incubating!"

Sally I'm down to one CCL and two roos from you. Two pullets (CCL and pj) went missing while I was at a conference. The week before I lost two ducks to a hawk, so I'm guessing more of the same.

We had goats and sheep about 35 years ago. She liked them until they started eating her flowers since then she has been anit-goat.

I could never seem to master a pen the Goats or the kids would not let the goats out of to play in the yard.
now the kids are gone and wont be able to leave the gate open so you should be fine to get some now

Did I tell you this pups pending owner had named her Harley? I switched it to Havyn as we are not even close to Harley peoples
lau.gif
But i like Harleys

Well this is heartbreaking. I went to the store and when I got back the alarm on my incubator was going off. It didn't turn off when it hit the correct temp and by the time I got there the eggs were 185 degrees. It melted one of my analog thermometers. So I killed 84 chicks. I guess this is back to the drawing board.
barnie.gif
WOW! i didnt think xmas lights could get that hot!!

All I have planned is to make phone calls to work and the insurance companies and to make more OT appointments for my wrist... another month of therapy then back to the Dr. He seems to think a second surgery is the answer but says he doesn't want to do it until we can get more mobility to my joint. He told me to use it but do the heat, rest and epsom salt baths to help relax it. I'm just going to deal with things as they come. no point in getting upset over things I can't control

Someone agrees!! Finally!!
Yes!! Here's today's egg:
can you tell the difference from chicken eggs now?

Dads bringing home a blood hound, apparently. I guess his name is JD.
i like bloodhounds and would really like to get one but i dont think it would be fair in this climate

oh look a kitty
Y

Yeah. He's not entirely sure what breed of working dog he wants. So he'll be working with his girl shepard, and then the blood hound. The girl dog is eager to work, but her nose isn't very good... the blood hounds are mellow dogs, and I guess this one likes to cuddle with stuffed animals when he's not working... so dad will work with him, and then work with the girl dog. He's taking the girl dog up to be evaluated by the tester, to see if she's good enough to be certified.

He's still not sure where/when/how if he wants to breed, either. He also mentioned allowing me to breed my great pyr, and buying me a male for my girl-dog.

I want a pig. ^.^
LOL!!!!

@Sally Sunshine Hi, I was there about forty five minutes yesterday. I took two besides the bottle one.

I'm BAAACK!

If anyone has access to CSPAN 3, there is an interesting hearing on the USPS. For those of us that ship eggs and birds, the discussion is very important in regards to the future of postal service.
frow.gif
hope you had a great time!!

My water wiggle was at 98.5 when I started it two days ago, so i raised temps to bring it to 99.5 or therabouts. Which made sense to me, when I candled on day 8 they seemed a little behind to me.
do you have a thermo in the wiggler with a memory so you can see the highs and lows?

Well, the sad week continues. The doe that lost her kids got her head in the hog panel and strangled herself

I will miss you Eclypse you were the sweetest doe I have had, and you never pushed even for feed. You would come a talking and just want pet. So long gentle girl.

awesome!!! do we get update pics??

Bonus 1: Another coyote down. Caught him running the fence to the Nigerian pregger pen.

Which led me to Bonus 2: I saw set of triplets being born through the thermal and hence the reason he was running the fence.

Shoot 'em, shoot 'em all!! And congrats on the babies!!!

There are only 2 animals on this place I wouldn't part with and that's my Jack Russell, Gator and my lab, Zoey. Everything else has a price tag. All the GSD's could be for sale. And livestock, well that's a living.

The wife on the other hand, I'm quite sure would argue. That's why she has a 450# barrow that she wouldn't let me trailer for slaughter 3 years ago. His name is "Pancakes" and follows her everywhere, even rolls over for belly scratches. I tried to load him on a trailer load 3 weeks ago for sausage and she told me she would divorce me. We still got that **** pig.
LOL

Good morning everyone. I am going to send a card to Ken (kwhites634) today. Let me know if you want a message in the card.

Prayers for SALLY. Who has surgery today.
i thought her surgery was next week?

For all the crazy things to discover in the past 12 hours, the TV and Blu Ray player being on this morning was a bit freaky. Add that Duckling was crying in her sleep, and the cat paw prints that the dog was suddenly interested in out the back door... I swear someone was in the house this morning!
ep.gif
no thanks!!

My wife is kinda the same. Not me, no separation needed. All I see are $$$'s.
and when you look at her barrow you see
shredding.jpg

Ok,I am done trying to catch u, you guys post faster than I read...

MORNING!!!

I am in the middle of the weeks hatch. I had to help a little legbar out. I will never understand why most birds hatch with no problems and another one has heat wrap shrinking in the same 70% humidity and next to each other. The poor little girl as really tight in her cocoon.

I have a little Dom that is not long for the world. She hatched herself but her yolk is still outside the body and it might have broken it looks like a runny over easy egg in her hole of the carton.
sorry about the little

Put on an eye patch, place him on your shoulder, and tell him the two of you are going to a costume party as a pirate and a parrot....He will be excited about the trip.
lau.gif

I sure hope our current administration changes this new FDA ruling about having a vet script for injectables. Pain in the rear even though all I do is call my farm vet. Just a pain in the rear for both of us. I was making an order to Valley Vet but had to call to get the scripts on file first. Valley Vet then needs the birthdate of the animals you are treating..... Are you kidding me? I have hundreds of animals..... . Then they asked the following: Her breed is, Angus. Her color is, Black. She is not neutered. Her name is, Ribeye Medium Rare.
LOL, but i think some injectables you can still get
oops NVM i see Kathy already answered

I have talked to the head Vet for the state NPIP program..
I am getting the tests done I need to ship the states I could not ship to before!!
wee.gif

I have been trained in doing the tests by USDA vet so I can do them myself and send in the samples needed.

Minnesota NPIP does not require AI testing. Many states include it in their requirements. It is optional as of 2017 in Mn, So I am going to get the testing done in the next couple weeks..
Then I think I will be able to sent them anywhere in 2-3 weeks!! I be so happy!!!

My hatch is going so-so.

I have :
2 toads out
4 Polish out
2 Dominiques out
2 Yokies
2 CLegbars.

I have a few more pipped, but my humidity is low today, 60-65 % closer to 60%..
I have come up with a plan to remedy that. I am going to drill a hole in the top of the hatcher right above the sponge/water pan using a plug to close it when I am not adding water. Then I can add extra water to the pan as needed!

No need to tell me how amazing I am to think of this, I already know I am almost as amazing as Chaos....
congrats on the testing and good luck on the rest of your hatch!!

Hi Liz, yep

awesome!!
