Pigs are the coolest pets though.

When we were kids we were not allowed to have horses. My Dad hated them, claimed he spent too much time behind them working when he was a kid.

My Brother and I looked for horse substitutes. We would use the cows when we had to go get them from the pastures. This had 2 downfalls.

1) The cows did not like it or cooperate.
2) When Dad caught us riding a cow, he became quite unreasonable

So we moved on to the pigs. They were great. If you fall off a pig it is a short fall, the ground is mushy and soft around them. Dad did not seem to mind. The pigs learned their names and came running when called.

The only downfall is Dad sold or butchered them fairly often and we needed to train new pigs every summer.

Pigs are totally devoted to you if you rub their bellies.

I think I finally understand Ralphie. It's 80% sarcasm, 15% caustic wit, and 5% hatred of webbed things

I think I have a migraine.

Just smash them already and lets be done with this, The pain is killing me.....

Morning, I did not read anything between these two posts, Did I miss anything?

Apparently not.
:clap

Thanks! I woke up very early (BEFORE my house rooster started crowing) when the outdoors cockerels got going. (I notice that my unattached bachelors crow earlier and more often than those with families.) In my sleepy haze, I worried that Monkey might not be ok (since I couldn't hear him) - not that I had a reason to. So I got up to check. The little 1 week old chicks were milling around in the dim light (turned their light on), and when I went to see Monkey, he raised his head to look at me like, "what?", then dozed off again. He wanted to sleep in - got up and started crowing about 30 minutes later. (Domesticity changes a fella, apparently.)

So, I figured I should take advantage of being awake (since I suppose I could crash any time!). I had fed and set out the sourdough starter last night, and so I made the bread dough this morning (will rise most of the day - it's the slow, minimal-work, no-knead method), and I'm currently making a batch of boiled eggs for next week.

I'm only supposed to have one cup of coffee, but I am thinking maybe I'll make an exception and have a second cup - don't tell my doctor...

I meant to take out the starter last night for pancakes. I forgot. Then Heatherfeather said pizza half an hour ago. :barnie So I have pizza dough resting on the counter. I'll make a breakfast pizza.
I don't really find a need for the starter being room temperature for quick breads.

My horse did OK on crushed asprin. Either one is hard on them eventually. I am sorry you have to go through this. The years my pretty boy were sick were so hard on both of us. The last two calls were by far the hardest thing. I hope that your horse gets better.

She's not suffering suffering right now - but she can't move easily with out painkillers. She now is moving good enough to come ot the gate, eat, walk around and drink... but when I run out of pain killers, i'll b ein trouble. I had her on it 2x a day, but was able to do it just once a day once I got her up and moving. And even then, the 60 dollar container of bute is only going to last maybe a month, on top of the weight gainer, sweet feed, MSM powder....

anymore vet visits and it's cheaper to just put her down. I'm not attached to her. I've had her just less then a year. She came to me old and crippled, which wasn't what I was expecting when I bought her. The story they gave me was not the horse I ended up with :( I tried hard to get her moving, up to a healthy weight... but she's just too old and too sick/crippled to be happy with out lots of pain meds, and I just cannot afford hundreds a month for an old horse i'm not attached too.

For the amount I could spend in 3 months, I could buy a young, semi-green broke horse who just needs work to be ridden safely for a few weeks.... you know? A healthy one. That takes almost no effort. If I'd had the horse for 20 years, I could see spending a lot for quality of life management... but not for a horse I got to ride 3x, and then called it quits because I could tell she was in too much pain to move.

My kids ride the goats, too ^.^ My rule is "if it'snot hurting them and they aren't scared of you, it's okay." if they don't like it, listen to the animal, or someone's gonna get hurt, and I'll make sure it's not the goat :P

(FWIW I make a lot of empty threats to my children, they know I'd never hurt them, but it gets my point across.)

Also, if you are just raising a couple don't expect to make any money. It is too expensive in a small operation. You can't compete with bigger producers. The best I was able to do was raise a pair selling three sides for what I had in them, and everyone pays processing. They eat six pounds of feed a day or so so it can get expensive. Make sure you get a good deposit upfront so you don't loose too much if someone backs out.
It's a pot belly pig. Not the type of pig you eat! LOL

Think, tutu's, and belly rubs.

My kids are excited because they've been researching on how to potty train said pet pig so it can live in the house half the time.

Definitely not expecting to make any money. I have a hobby farm, I make extra money on the side to support my animal farm addiction. I lose hundreds per month and do it quite joyfully. LOL
