EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I'm anxious about having things ready for the baby chicks coming next week, and though I have things to do (I always have things to do), my actual calendar was clear today, and the weather was forecast to be nice, so I have taken the day off to make some headway on some of the household and chicken chores. I already spent a few hours on chores early in the morning. Break time over, but first, I have photos to share. MC, just for you, photos of REALLY POOPY MHPs in my three current brooders.

These are the little 2 week olds. They still sleep under it at night, and hang out under there occasionally during the day, but have started preferring the top.

These are the three week olds - I caught two coming out from under to see what I was doing. I would normally turn the setting on this one to medium at this point, but I'm moving the two week olds in with them this weekend, so I'll leave it on high for another week.

And these are the five week olds - this MHP (and the one above) is quite large, and they can go under it if they want (I've noticed that some of the pullets will hide under there to get out of the craziness - they are big, and will be headed outside soon - things are a little snug.). The actual heating pads for these have been off since 4 weeks - they still use it for comfort after they no longer need heat. This one has a puppy pad on it.

Here are some older photos of a previous hatch (right after hatching), as well as when I put one in the coop outside when the temperature dropped (using towels to extend the insulated area after "tucking them in").

OK, I need to go get some more work done.

Quote: Not certain, I'd have to check with Sally. Pepper's eggs are/were light brown. I'll be putting him with the OE and maybe maran hens, hatch a few and see what I get.

:plbb Nope...

Everything is so far away here it'd be at least a whole day trek to make it to the grocery store and back if you went by dogsled.

Grocery store? Would that be like a modern version of a Sutler's store on a RCMP fort, or a trading post?

1st description describes the general store to a tee, that's where I buy grain.

But no, I buy food for me at a place with electric lights and rows of shelves. :plbb

Do you find getting blubber by the pound or bushel is better for your wallet? Do you make your own clothing from seal furs?

How long did it take you to master the ulu?

Buying in bulk is always cheaper. Nope, I have my neighbour Aklaq make clothing in exchange for the unfrozen eggs...

It took me 5 years, 3 days, and 16 seconds.
