You would be so proud of me too,,

I tried to recreate your cold egg hatch,,

I being old, forgot 6 eggs on the top of the incubator when I out eggs in the hatcher...The room was 75 degrees but they sat out for 20 hours...

I have my fingers crossed on them hatching..
What day were they on?

Picked these up to test for hot spots in the new bator. Initially I'm impressed with how close they are aside from the one with the humidity being off by 5%. It should at least be good enough to ensure adequate circulation correct?? And yes that's inside a 4 season sun room that is apparently not very well insulated.
Probably. Just to be on the safe side, after calibration, I would rotate their locations.

Yes, I finally gave my girl 8 eggs to sit on. I went to our Amish neighbor's farm and horse traded a dozen of my eggs for cooking for 6 hatching eggs. He gave me 7 and when he saw my Welsummer eggs his eyes popped. He wound up asking for some to hatch out so I came home and separated the boys so hopefully, the Welsummer and Welsummer/Speckled Sussex cross roosters will get busy and give me some fertile Welsummer eggs by next week.

I found one bantam egg under my hen so I left it and swapped out the fake eggs with real ones. She was very good about me doing that but watched really carefully as I removed one and stuffed two under her.

Here she is, in all her prehistoric glory. The appearance is really deceptive. While my other Welsummer hens can be a bit stand offish, she is really a sweet and friendly hen. I'm wondering if that is because she was broody raised and not brooded in the house like her mother was.

If her appearance is any indication, she is going to be a fierce momma.

Dolly is wearing a hen apron. I think it gives her a nice motherly appearance, LOL!!

Congratulations everyone on the new baby goats. They make me want a couple-4-5-6. It's kinda like chicken math isn't it?
So I read that as your eggs won't all be pure Welsummer.

Quote: Every state is so different.
Some require a percentage of birds on the property tested. In MO it is every bird over 4 months of age. I had a flock of 14 week olds he decided to test too since they were so close. I guess I didn't have to comply but did so anyway.
50 cents plus mileage could get pricey. The fact that it is free here made it ALMOST a no brainer.
There is a charge for any test other than P/T.
The state is talking about big budget cuts including to the Ag Dept. I hope they don't start charging.

...

Sorry to hear that. So young.

...
His son is only 16 too. Sad to read his post that he wrote about his dad.

During the week I see my hot bride of 16 1/2 years for about an hour a day. We conduct the family affairs by phone at lunch and emails from work. Let's say she has less than 0% interest in my birds. Couple weeks ago she gutted every bird I slaughtered and plucked. I just let her know to stop and get me cash for eggs. She was or acted super excited that I was getting eggs and I knew enough to not bore her with details. She moonlights as a professional photographer and I have been her back up at several weddings....me getting dressed up to watch a bunch of drunks is not my forte. A marriage is not give and take, it is not 50/50. If your not in it 100% giving 100/100 you are doomed.
Mine isn't fond of my poultry hobby either. There is no way in hell that she would gut a chicken. She won't even eat them if I cook them.

I am a tester, If you claim to have tested your birds and do not you are committing a felony. Do you really think a person is going to not test their birds with the possibility of a fine and or prison?

We have tons of testers around here, 50 cents and mileage would be a good rate if they have the birds ready for you. Waiting for birds is a pain and can limit the birds you can test in an hour.

Also the test takes 2 minutes per bird to complete after the smear is made. You are not going to get rich at this. If the state requires an AI test then you have to do a saliva smear into a medium also. Turkeys, peacocks and other species require a larger blood sample they do not like to give up easily.

It is not the easy money you make it out to be. I test mainly for my own convenience and to help out some local 4H kids
Having the birds ready is a big problem. Mine are scattered in 6 or 7 buildings and if they aren't confined indoors, I would never be able to catch one. Good thing he comes early and only once a year.
I have been lucky enough to have a helper.

...Then, after a suitable amount of time, tell her you researched & found that buying all the components amounted to almost as much as buying the finished products,...
That is so true.

Thank you kindly! First time using an incubator, usually use broodies. I have a GFQ Styrofoam still with a turner. I had gotten shipped eggs from fellow BYCer but the shipment was delayed, so we both expected poor viability. That was correct, none of them developed. I also included four of my own girls' fertile eggs in case we had a lone hatch from her stock. Mine have all developed well, and tomorrow is lockdown, day 18.

I just candled the eggs this morning, and the air cells don't look big enough. I was a jerk and didn't weigh them before I put them in, so I don't know the weight difference.

It's not a big deal if they don't hatch, but I'd like to at least learn. Is there anything I can do now? I had been running the humidity at 35%, but sometimes it got up to 40%. Our house is pretty dry right now.
TIMELINES PIPS ZIPS!!! & MARKING AIR CELLS DAY 18, DRAW DOWN, INTERNAL PIP, EXTERNAL PIP, and ZIPPING post #35770

Can you take pics of the eggs with air cells marked ? I agree, if you say they are still small dont up until you see some drawing down.... see info above/

@BantyChooks

Thanks Sally, I will check tonight when I get home and update here. :)

Welp, it looks like Maple has a twisted face. Her beak seems like it tilts to the right now. It wasn't like this a few weeks ago.

Any chance it won't keep progressing?

Sweet thanks! I just started with peroxide because that is what the vet suggested. I have chlorhexidine, vetricin, nitrop., etc.
I swear by that stuff Dax. I would use the chlorhexidine next-it's basically "body bleach". It is used a lot for oral care for intubated patients and is now gold standard at the hospital for all IV starts. This will clean the area but not treat it if there is an infection.
