HELP:
My incubator rotator got unplugged for a little over 24 hrs on day 7-8. Will it effect the chicks that much?? I'm hoping they are going to be ok and it won't kill them. This is a VERY EXPENSIVE batch!! And it's the only chance at me having a special flock!

They will probably not be affected by this single event.

That question, I'm afraid, is right up there with "Which came 1st, the chicken or the egg?" I don't know that there's a definitive answer for either question. Lots of people have spent lots of money designing/marketing/buying/using different designs. Unfortunately, the"perfect" feeder has yet to be made.

The best I can suggest is for you to visit a thread called "Show me your feeders" elsewhere on BYC. There are literally hundreds of homegrown designs, and at least that many more modifications of each of them. I chose what I felt was the best of the lot for my application and built it, secure in the knowledge that my wasted feed days were behind me. No such luck. I have less waste now than ever before, but I still have some. Fortunately, my birds are able to clean up most of what the slop out; I can live with that.

I've taken the opposite approach.... I just dump it on the floor & don't bother with feeders

Hello Sally Sunshine... I have a chick question . Can you help? My 16 chicks have really bad manners and particularly a certain lavender orpington... they scratch ALL the feed out of their feeder till it is empty.( a standard plastic quart with red plastic tray that you find at the feed stores). I just hate to waste all the feed. I do let them eat up as much as they can . But it starts getting contaminated and smelling form being on the floor of the brooder. I know how to teach kids to not throw their food on the floor but a chick?!

If you really want to save feed and mess, ferment it, OR if your not that brave you can feed WET feed! just dont let it sit and go bad!!

Does anyone have a tip about this? I have seen it a little but this is getting wild. They literally empty their feeder onto the floor in about an hour! Pretty industrious for babies. ( 3 1/2 weeks old ) speckled sussex, full size cochin, salmon favorelles and 2 very sweet dove like lavender orpingtons
